Saturday December 6
New York’s fall schedule culminates this weekend with Cigar Mile Handicap Day at Aqueduct, featuring a four-race program of varying levels plus a half-million dollar stake for state-bred horses. For this weekend’s winners, let’s take a look at two of the key races on Aqueduct’s Saturday card, including the $500,000 Cigar Mile Handicap and the $250,000 Remsen Stakes for 2-year-olds. If we can pick the winners of these two features, we’ll be well on our way to a big day at the Big A. Good luck.
Aqueduct, Race 9, $250,000 Remsen Stakes, post time 3:08 PM ET
A full field of 12 2-year-old horses will take to the track looking for the ramp heading into next year’s Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve in Saturday’s Grade 2 Remsen Stakes. It’s a wide-open race and it could come down to which of these youngsters is not only the most talented and precocious, but also who can best complete this extended 1 1/8-mile distance test in two turns. The horse in the race with perhaps the best credentials to date is #11 Talkwho worked hard to win his career debut by seven furlongs at Saratoga in an effort that looks even better now that third place from that race, Further Ado, came back to break his first by 20 lengths at Keeneland and then won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs. Talkin followed up the first victory with a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes, a mile behind promising winner Napolean Solo, while ahead of third-place Universe, who came back to finish second in the aforementioned Kentucky Jockey Club. He has had excellent company and held his own, and this race looks like his time to shine, despite the wide post position. The biggest threat seems to be #7 Detonatorwho last time stretched to a mile for trainer Rick Dutrow and won his second start in fine style in an important race with the following first winners Rebel Instinct and #6 Courtingwho graduated with odds of 0.19-1 over a field that included #4 Crunchiness. Other top challengers include both #2 Paladin And #9 Apostatebawling their eyes out in a Belmont during Big A’s first race, in which Renegade had the upper hand and didn’t seem to do enough to warrant his disqualification to second. Renegade was the horse with the tougher trip in that race, and he estimates a slight lead over Paladin from an outpost here, which should actually benefit his running style more than his inside draw last time.
The play: Bet #11 Talking (5-1) to win and play him in exact boxes #7 Igniter (6-1)And #9 Renegade (5-1). Play a trifecta box with four horses by adding #2 Paladin (3-1) to the bet along with the top three selections.
Aqueduct, Race 10, $500,000 Cigar Mile Handicap, post time 3:37 PM ET
The Grade 2 Cigar Mile Handicap may not have star power this year, but the race has attracted a competitive field of seven horses and is certainly worth a bet or two. Much of the attention on the board will be focused on the two fast horses on the outside: #6 Phileas Fogg And #7 Bishops Baywho are clear contenders. However, both could find themselves involved in a salty pace situation up front, along with another likely frontrunner in the race. #2 Mika. With all those horses potentially taking the lead, the race could produce a come-from-behind winner and the perfect candidate for that is #4 Crazy masona stone closer who will be given great pace to chase and an extra furlong to work with after posting good results at seven furlongs this year, including a win in the Grade 2 Carter Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, a second in the Grade 3 Vosburgh Stakes presented by Army Mule, and a third in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes in a solid but unheralded campaign to date. Irad Ortiz Jr. picks up the mountain. Phileas Fogg adds blinkers and Joel Rosario to prepare for this shortening of the distance to one mile after completing two turns at longer distances so far this year. He defeated Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Antiquarian and last year’s Cigar Mile winner Locked in this year’s 1 ¼-mile Suburban Stakes Presented by Subourbon and has since also played competitively at the highest level of competition in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Woodward Stakes. Of all the frontrunners in this year’s Cigar Mile, he has the best chance of carrying his speed to the finish.
The play: Bet #4 Crazy Bricklayer (7-2) to win and play it in an exacta box #6 Phileas Fogg (9-5).
