McDonald admitted he had no inside news on when Khawaja would hang up his boots. The former international cricketer also noted that Khawaja has done enough in 2025 to feature in the upcoming Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“He’s currently off with his family for a few days. We always have conversations about where the players are, there’s no indication he’s doing it in Sydney. But his performances in this calendar year have been good enough to warrant selection, so I’d say he’ll be there in Sydney as a marking center,” McDonald said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
McDonald also pointed out that any long-term decision on Khawaja can wait as there is enough time in Australia’s next Test assignment, allowing the selection committee and team management to make calls on the veteran batsman’s future.
“I think Nasty will come to us when he retires, there is no doubt about that. And after this test match we have eight months until the next one, so we have a lot of time as a selection group to make that decision. If there were a direct series of this, it would be a little different. But with the eight-month gap, we as a selection panel have a lot of time to think about our next test team. Nasty pushing forward,” he added.
Jake Weatherald, despite not firing so far, has earned his place at the top of the rankings through consistent performances in domestic cricket. Travis Head has also been pushed up and has produced brilliant results Australia. Khwaja has scored 153 runs in five innings in this series so far.
