Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter often fought against some of the biggest tournaments of the sport in their time. Now they will be next to each other if they guide the team world at De Laver Cup.
Team World Captain Agassi and VICE captain Rafter, two of the 29 members in ATP No. 1 Club, take over in a new era of Laver Cup Leadership. Agassi replaces John Mcenroe as the leader of Team World, while Yannick Noah Spearheads Team Europe, previously led by Bjorn Borg.
“The truth is told, I don’t think I would have done it if Pat didn’t say he would come to me,” said Agassi Atptour.com. “I literally said,” You are the man I want. “He was one of the big players, one of the big athletes, one of the big competitors.”
Agassi and Rafter met 15 times, spread over 1993-2001, in their Lexus ATP Head2head rivement, with the Americans who won 10 of those competitions. Now, more than two decades after their last meeting, Agassi and Rafter’s mutual respect and friendship will be shown in San Francisco.
“He was one of those guys who when I lost him, I could actually take a comfort in the fact that,” Well, at least I won Pat and I am happy for him, “Agassi reflected. “He just always deserved the respect of players on and next to the field and now to share the same side of the net with him is a victory for me.”
Rafter echoed the same sentiment to the collected media: “Andre asked me:” Do you want to be involved? “Being with Andre is great. I had contact with him once a year. [I’m] Pampered rot, I love it. ”
After a narrow 13-11 defeat last year, Team World will strive for its third Laver Cup triumph (2022, 2023) with new votes on the sidelines.
