Nissan has just quietly made the Pathfinder a contender again

Nissan has taken the covers off the updated 2026 model year Nissan Pathfinder, bringing with it some much-needed improvements to keep it competitive in the increasingly challenging mid-size SUV segment. The Pathfinder is a common overlooked option in the segmentwith many criticizing it for being mechanically outdated compared to the segment leaders. Nissan hasn’t made any updates to the powertrain setup, so this remains a valid criticism, but there are some key designs and specs that will increase its relevance in the market.

Despite being a relatively less popular option, Nissan has seen some market success with the Pathfinder this year, as its third-quarter sales report shows Pathfinder sales up 33.2 percent year-on-year, but the brand has only sold 72,285 units so far this year, which is significantly less than the Pathfinder. For the 2026 model year, Nissan is keeping the changes to the Pathfinder’s exterior minimal yet impactful. Updated features include a refreshed front and rear fascia with satin exterior badging and a new Baltic Teal paint finish. Inside, you get access to a slightly refreshed dashboard, including a larger touchscreen infotainment system across the range and embossed Pathfinder lettering below the infotainment system. The Pathfinder SL and Platinum trims now have black roof rails, as opposed to the previous silver finish. Improvement of the platinum finishOverall refinement includes a new 20-inch wheel design, quilted seat patterns and wood-colored interior trim.

The aforementioned touchscreen system is a crucial addition to the Pathfinder’s interior experience, as it adds more standard and available technology to aid driver focus and connectivity. The new screen measures 12.3 inches and now comes with wireless as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SL trim now also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, finally bringing the Pathfinder to the same technological level as some of its main rivals.

Relevant trims now also include a redesigned wireless charger with an increased power of 15 watts for more consistent charging performance, improving functionality on the go. It also features an integrated cooling fan to reduce heat build-up while your device charges, and magnetic phone positioning to keep devices in the optimal position while charging.

The Rock Creek, SL and Platinum grades of the Pathfinder now benefit from an HD Intelligent Around View Monitor with two innovative camera systems that make parking in tight spots a lot easier. The system also includes a Front Wide View system that provides a 180-degree view of the front and sides of the SUV, allowing you to see past parked cars or past obstructed garage entrances. The Invisible Hood View feature provides a virtual view through the vehicle’s hood and engine compartment, allowing you to more accurately position the Pathfinder’s wheels to navigate tight spaces.

Nissan’s Latch and Glide technology allows you to tilt the second row to access the third row, even with a child seat installed. The cargo area still offers 16.6 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row, which you can expand to 80.5 cubic feet by folding down the second and third rows. The SV, Rock Creek and SL trims are equipped with a power tailgate while the platinum features a motion-activated power tailgate.

As mentioned, the 2026 Pathfinder retains Nissan’s 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which produces an unchanged 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission that you can control via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The optional intelligent 4×4 powertrain is available on all trims, but comes standard on the Rock Creek. You can control this via the driving mode dial on the center console. This gives you access to seven options, allowing you to customize the Pathfinder’s performance via the Auto, Eco, Tow, Sport, Sand, Mud and Rut settings. You can use the Pathfinder to tow up to 3,500 pounds, but if you opt for the Rock Creek and Platinum grades, and the SV Premium Package or SL Premium Package, this capacity is upgraded to 6,000 pounds.

Expect disappointing fuel economy

A major reason for the Pathfinder’s inability to keep up with the competition in the sales charts is its limited powertrain options. The mid-size SUV still doesn’t benefit from turbocharging or hybridization, meaning it outperforms most of its rivals in terms of performance and efficiency.

The EPA indicates that the Pathfinder’s fuel economy doesn’t change much between powertrain options. The front-wheel drive model gets 20/27/23 MPG, while the all-wheel drive configuration returns 20/27/23 MPG. Both models travel 426 miles on the 18.5 gallon tank.

The EPA estimates that this model will cost you $1,750 more in fuel over five years compared to the average new vehicle, which you will spend $1,950 annually on fuel and $3.28 to drive 25 miles. A full tank of gas will cost you about $56.

The larger wheels on the Platinum trim reduce fuel consumption to 20/25/22 MPG and travel 400 miles on one tank. These will cost you $2,250 more in fuel over five years, while it costs you $2,050 in fuel every year and $3.43 to drive 40 kilometers. Choosing the Rock Creek has a big impact on efficiency, with the EPA estimating it will consume 20/23/21 MPG and travel 388 miles between fill-ups. You will find that over five years you will spend $6,250 more on fuel, $2,850 per year on fuel and $4.74 to drive 25 miles.

The Pathfinder’s polarizing reputation

The 2025 Nissan Pathfinder currently has an owner review score of 3.8/5 stars. It gets a strong reputation for its striking looks, impressive ride quality and spacious interior, but some owners tend to struggle with its reliability and quality, powertrain and overall value.

JD power releases the 2025 Pathfinder range with a consumer verified overall score of 83/100, consisting of 84/100 for quality and reliability, 82/100 for the driving experience, 80/100 for resale and 85/100 for the dealer experience.

iSeeCars gives the Pathfinder an overall score of 8.4/10, including 7.7/10 for reliability, 7.4/10 for retained value and 10/10 for safety. The publication suggests the car will travel 10.2 years or 248,340 kilometers without mechanical failure, along with an 18.1 percent chance of reaching 200,000 kilometers.

In terms of value retention, you can expect the Pathfinder to lose $20,315 or 55.8 percent of its value over five years and 90,000 miles, which is about five percent worse than the rest of the segment.

The Pathfinder is a volume seller for the Nissan brand, but it still has a long way to go before it starts to make a dent in Toyota and Honda’s dominance in the segment. These upgrades across all trims are a welcome addition, but it will be a curious case to see if this is enough to give the Japanese brand the boost it needs to become more relevant in the competitive market.
