Under Amanda Laing, broadcasting and streaming content will become more aligned where they see opportunities for audiences and revenue.
“It’s been a very difficult week and a very challenging week,” said Amanda Laing, Nine Entertainment’s new broadcast and streaming boss.
“No one wants to say goodbye to friends and colleagues, but I hope people can understand the strategy and how the operating model serves the strategy.”
Laing was speaking to the press after a tumultuous week in which up to 50 staff, including on-air presenters, were made redundant across Broadcasting and Streaming, although some contracts were not renewed.
Nine’s Stan streaming arm currently generates around 28 percent of Nine’s group revenue, while TV generates just over 37 percent. Five years ago, TV represented 51 percent of Nine’s group revenues and Stan 11 percent.
The profit shift is even more dramatic: Stan’s revenues rose 31 percent last year, while television declined 23 percent.
Some costs include highly paid on-air talent.
“We look at remuneration across the business, from people who are on-air, to people involved in production, to people in IT, to engineers, technology and all these things to make sure we have the right cost base and the right investments in the right areas.”
Laing today briefed staff on the merger of broadcast and streaming, also outlining job cuts and new management appointments.
Stan and Nine’s television department staff have already moved into one floor of Nine’s North Sydney headquarters.
Laing says the merger now gives it more flexibility in moving content, including sports and entertainment, between Stan and Nine to where the best audience and revenue options are.
Content will continue to move between traditional broadcast and broadcast video-on-demand, digital platforms and streaming.
Nine recently added 3,000 new Stan subscriptions by airing its first season Bump on free-to-air, while the second season was exclusively on Stan.
“Great content will find an audience – and especially Australian content.”
