Nigeria’s Hilda Baci breaks world record for the biggest Jollof rice dish

Nigerian chef Hilda Baci broke the world record for cooking the biggest pot of Jollof Rice ever in Lagos last week.

Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed the performance on social media and said that Mrs. Baci’s brew from the popular West African dish weighed a whopping 8,780 kg.

After nine hours of cooking, the effort was almost endangered after the gigantic pot was used to break the dish while it was hoisted on a tap to be weighed – luckily none of the rice was spilled.

Mrs. Baci celebrated the triumph by thanking her team and supporters: “This moment is not only mine … it’s all of us.”

Despite the massive pot that nodded twice during the weighting, a member of the Baci team told the BBC last week that they collected evidence from different cameras to send to GWR so that it could be officially recognized.

Baci paid tribute to the “tireless team” that made the performance possible and shared a video of her that responded to the news on social media.

“This Guinness World Record was built on unity, love and collective power,” she wrote.

“We have written history together, for Nigeria, for Africa, and for everyone who believes in the power of food to bring us closer, this victory is also yours.”

The recipe of Baci for the crown on Jollof dish included 4,000 kg of rice, 500 boxes of tomato puree, 600 kg onions and 168 kg of goat meat – all cast in a tailor -made pot that can contain 23,000 liters.

Last week thousands of people had gathered to view Baci’s newest world record offer – in 2023 she held the title for the longest cooking marathon on almost four days.

Their support was well rewarded because the gigantic dish later divided into individual portions and spread over the enormous crowd and passers -by.

The chef told BBC Pidgin earlier that it took her a year to plan how she would tackle the Mammoth Challenge.

“We [Nigerians] Are the giant of Africa, and Jollof is a food that everyone knows Africans, “she said.

“It would be logical if we had the biggest jollof rice pot, it would be nice for the country.”

She was assisted by 10 other chefs in red uniforms with long wooden spoons to stir the food.

The production of the gigantic steel ship to hold her dish took a team of 300 people for two months, but one of his legs took place at the crucial time.

Jollof Rice is a staple in different West -African countries, with rice stewed in a tomato sauce, often combined with meat or seafood.

Baci won a competition for her version of Jollof Rice in 2021 and then became a national sensation in 2023 when she claimed the World Cooking Marathon record – a tiring 93 hours and 11 minutes.

However, she was later surpassed by the Irish chef Alan Fisher. The current record holder is Evette Quoibia from Australia, with 140 hours and 11 minutes, according to Gwr.
