After Sinner tested positive twice for a clostebol, the ITIA quietly investigated the case and later concluded that the Italian had not knowingly taken a banned substance. The official explanation was that physio Giacomo Naldi used an over-the-counter spray while massaging the 24-year-old, and thus a banned substance entered the former world number 1’s body.
The moment Sinner’s doping case came to light, Kyrgios became one of the most outspoken players in the field. He called for a ban and accused anti-doping authorities of treating the Italian’s case differently. After WADA appealed ITIA’s ruling and the Italian was handed a three-month ban, Kyrgios celebrated.
Last month, Piers Morgan received Novak Djokovic for an interview and asked the Serbian for his opinion on the Sinner doping case.
“That cloud will follow him like the cloud of COVID will follow me for the rest of his or my career in this,” Djokovic said last month.
Kyrgios: The way Sinner’s case was handled was not good for the sport
This week, Kyrgios was also a guest on Morgan’s show and the British presenter asked him about Djokovic’s comments on Sinner.
“You always see my position on it and I don’t think it’s nice to talk about it now… I think the most important thing Novak said was that whether it was there or not, whether it was intentional or not, he is still responsible. And I think the way the case was handled as a whole was very… it was not a good image for the sport. I mean, he was our No. 1 tennis player in the world,” Kyrgios said.
During the same conversation, Kyrgios praised Sinner for making a strong running return after a three-month absence and tipped the 24-year-old Italian to finish as “one of the greatest”.
