The Toronto Maple Leafs will have to assure Auston Matthews that they can remain competitive
Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews is over his slow start and back to his normal self. It is not known what affected his play. Either way, can he take them to the playoffs on his back?
Matthews has two years left on his contract and the pressure is on for the Leafs to build a Stanley Cup contender. He has clearly seen the organizational changes, the lack of prospects and the selection choices. Could Matthews be asking for a change of scenery, similar to Matthew Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes?
The Maple Leafs will have to show Matthews that they can still be legitimate contenders. They have the goaltending, capable defender and depth scoring.
New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton checks a number of boxes the Leafs need. The acquisition cost can be high and he has some issues in his game.
