Could the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers keep tabs on Martin Necas if he becomes available?
The Fourth Period: Colorado Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland said he has spoken with Martin Necas’ agent about the Avs’ desire to extend the 26-year-old forward. Every deal is not close.
It’s unknown what Necas is looking at for his next contract, but it would likely be around $10 million per season if he has another solid season. Last season he scored 83 points in 79 games.
James Murphy of RG Media: An NHL scout would be surprised if Martin Necas finishes the season with the Colorado Avalanche because he doesn’t see him re-signing with them.
Necas joins Artemi Panarin and Adrian Kempe as the top UFAs for 2026. According to reports, the Los Angeles Kings and Kempe are close to an extension, but Necas and Paranin do not appear to be close in their talks.

“I don’t see how the Avalanche can pull this off with Necas,” the aforementioned source said. “They need to lock up Cale Makar next season, and even with the cap going up, where will they find the money to give Necas? So now the real question for me is: Will the Avalanche keep him as their own playoff rental at the trade deadline, or will he go to another team as a rental and sign an extension with them?”
A possible extension of Cale Makar cannot take place until July 1, and would not come into effect until 2027. He could be looking at well over $17 million per season.
The source said if the Avalanche want to move Necas, the Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers are two teams to watch. Both showed some interest when Necas was with the Hurricanes. The Anaheim Ducks could be a wild card team. They have the prospects to offer. The Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks are two teams that have the cap space to acquire him and the room to expand.
