The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking at the trade market for defensemen
Overdrive: Darren Dreger and Jonas Siegel of the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a defenseman. Winnipeg Jets defenseman Luke Schenn could be a cheap option, but they should look higher. Rasmus Andersson? They have limited trading assets, and does that even make sense?

Siegel: “Crazy.”
Hayes: “And you know, like (Chris) Tanev, who knows. (Anthony) Solarz, who knows? Those are important pieces, right? How do the Leafs navigate this?”

Dreger: “Well, they’re looking for a defenseman. I mean, that’s been the case, you know.”

Hayes: “Like an impact guy, or a depth guy.”
Dreger: “Well, the best available. I mean, there are depth pieces available. I mean, look what the Winnipeg Jets are doing right now, right?”
I’m pretty sure if the Toronto Maple Leafs want to reunite Luke Schenn, they’ll get him for a lower draft. And I think Luke is looking for a better opportunity, a bigger role. I mean, we can appreciate it considering where he is in his career, and I mean, this is very respectable for Luke. Because, okay, admittedly, he’s not. He was never fast, but now he’s slower. But man, he’s still a simple, smart and tough defender. You know, he has that personality in that room no matter how many minutes he plays.
But yeah, I mean, Brad Treliving has to aim higher. And how much higher? Again, that depends on what they ask for or comes back. That’s what they have trouble with.”
Jeff O’Neill: “Jonas, you’re wincing a little.”
Siegel: “Well, because I wrote about this for , and I mentioned Schenn. I guess it makes sense, because of the price.
And like they’re better defenders. Rasmus Andersson is obviously a much better defender. But I don’t know, I don’t think they have the resources to get a better defender.”
O’Neill: “They have zero assets.”
Siegel: “Well, they don’t have any assets. Like, you could trade Easton Cowan if you wanted to. You could trade Ben Danford. They’ve got a second-round pick in 2027, cool. Like, they don’t have anything, but other teams have better stuff.”
Hayes: “Right.”
Siegel: “You know what I mean.”

Hayes: “Yeah, exactly. So that’s the question, and yeah, I mean, what’s your team right now too? Trelivings has to think about that. You know, it’s like, if you’re in Colorado, you’re like, yeah, we’re in it to win it. It looks like the Leafs aren’t even in the playoffs right now.”
O’Neill: “What are you going to do, spend on this? You don’t even have clarity about what you’re doing…”
Hayes: “Yes, exactly. Let’s say you go get Rasmus Andersson. Let’s say that’s the guy.”
Siegel: “Yes, and let’s say you need all your best stuff, Cowan, Danford and picks…”
Dreger: “Only if you get them for an extension, of course.”
Siegel: “And then that’s its own thing. Should you extend this guy?”
Dreger: “Why not?”
Siegel: “Well, your defense is old. It’s going to be 30…”
Dreger: “You can adjust that in the offseason, right? I mean, you’re going to have to move some of those pieces.”
Siegel: “Can you?”
Dreger: “Yes, I mean.”
Siegel: “But yes, it’s a fair question, are you extending it? Is that the right move? Well, that’s
all your stuff.”
Hayes: “To me it doesn’t feel like the right timing for that. I would personally give it another ten or fifteen games.”
Dreger: “Honest, honest.”

Hayes: “You know, I just know they’ve been playing better lately. Good for them. They’re in a better position now. I don’t make a play where I unload everything I’ve got.”
Dreger: “Well.”
Hayes: “Personally, and you know where I stand on Jonas, I think at some point they have to reload, reload, rebuild the farm system. Like you have to have young players.”
Dreger: “Not much in the Marlies.”
