Are Quinn Hughes’ Trade Talks Bad for Business?

Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas discussed on the latest 32 Thoughts Podcast the Quinn Hughes talks and trade talk that came up around the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night, Devils from New JerseyDetroit Red Wings and other teams.

NHLRumors.com Transcripts

Friedman: “I’ll say this: People don’t want to talk about it around the league. They don’t want to talk about Quinn Hughes. And I think it’s because they know how big of a deal it is. And so I’m letting everyone walk through it.”

Now, at the end of it all, I asked, Okay, we know they like those guys. There has to be a Quinn Hughes component to it. And I have to tell you, Kyle, people don’t want to talk about it. They really don’t, because it’s such a hand grenade for obvious reasons.

Bukauskas: “Yes, it looks like David Blaine’s escape routine.”

Friedman: “Exactly. I think it’s, I mean, you saw how cautiously I talked about it on Saturday night. But then Quinn Hughes refers to Tom Fitzgerald as Fitzy in the post-game. And people were like, he’s a devil. He calls the GM by his nickname. I mean, we can all see this. Like it’s a big deal. And I think it’s kryptonite for a lot of people. They I don’t really want to throw gasoline on the fire.

But like I said, I think when the Canucks published the memo, there was a conversation happening. And I don’t know who initiated it, and I don’t know exactly what was said, but I know they spoke at least once. And I heard it was about, okay, where is everything, and where are we going?

NHL Rumors: Sabers and Ukko-Pekka Luukonen, and the Canucks and Quinn Hughes

And I did a podcast interview last week where I talked about Detroit. And I do believe that if Vancouver and Detroit want to make a deal, I believe a deal can be made there as well, and I also think they’ve talked.

But I can tell you one team that definitely doesn’t want to talk about it, and that’s Vancouver. As if they refused outright. And I understand, because it’s their backyard. It’s something very, very sensitive for them.

So I will say this: I think there are conversations going on around Hughes, and it’s just hard to predict how long it will last or where it will end up.

I’ll tell you this. The other one, Kyle, is very interesting, and I haven’t spoken to Hughes since we did the interview at the beginning of the season on the media tour in Vegas. There are a lot of people who like to debate whether or not he wants to play in New Jersey. Does he want to go there right now? Is it his favorite destination? How would it affect his brother, Luke, if Quinn is there on the blue line, would (Quinn) be ahead of (Luke)?

NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes was asked about the trade talks with the New Jersey Devils

I don’t have an answer to this question, but I at least think the Canucks and the Devils wanted to try to figure out the answer. So that’s where I think it lies. I think so. I think the teams are talking to the Canucks about it, and we’ll see where it goes.”
