Nashville Predators GM is standing firm on not wanting to retain salary for Steven Stamkos

The Fourth Period: Sources continue to say teams are asking the Nashville Predators to keep forward Steven Stamkos’ salary, while Predators GM Barry Trotz continues to say they don’t want to keep salary.

The New Jersey Devils are one of the teams signed to Stamkos, who is reportedly willing to waive his freedom of movement clause for the right fit. It is not known who Stamkos considers the right candidate.

Predators forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Jonathan Marchessault are also generating some trade interest. Like Stamkos, nothing seems imminent, and the Preds are right in the playoff race after a while of running.

NHL Rumors: Ottawa Senators and the Calgary Flames

Kiefer Sherwood is ‘highly unlikely’ to be extended, as are two potentially interested teams

Ben Kuzma of The Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have made another offer to incoming UFA forward Kiefer Sherwood, but it is “highly unlikely” he will re-sign with the Canucks. Elliotte Friedman noted this weekend that there is a “significant gap.”

Sherwood has scored 17 goals this season and is on course for 34. He is also second in the league with 198 strikes. His value to a Stanley Cup contender is high. With a $1.5 million salary cap, the Canucks can hope for a bidding war. Since the Canucks are looking at a hybrid retool, paying Sherwood a $5 million fee may not make sense.

Term and money will be important for Sherwood as he has only had short-term deals throughout his career.

The Canucks are hoping to get a first-round pick and a prospect (or an equivalent draft pick and a lower pick) for Sherwood.

The Dallas Stars could be a team to watch for Sherwood given the injury to right winger Tyler Seguin. He could be nice with Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. However, the Stars do not yet have a 2026 first-round pick. Could the Canucks be interested in Mavrik Bourque and perhaps a second-round pick?

NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and the Anaheim Ducks

The Boston Bruins have their 2026 first-round pick and Sherwood’s style suits the Bruins. Can they pry Fraser Minten and get a second-round pick? The Bruins are 27-year-old Casey Mittelstadt and his $5.75 million cap hit has another year of success left.
