The Devils were unable to match the Wild’s offer and their search continues
Peter Baugh of The Athletic: The New Jersey Devils were involved in Quinn Hughes trade talks and felt they had made a strong offer, according to a source. It is not known exactly what was offered, but something similar would have been Simon Nemec and Dawson Mercer, a prospect and a first. The Wild’s offer was better and they didn’t have to give up their salary first.
The only way the Devils would have been comparable to the Wild’s offer was if Jesper Bratt or Nico Hischier were in it. Non-starters for the Devils.
The Devils have been talking to other teams to see what they can do, especially up front. CAP space and trade protection make things difficult. Nashville Predators center Ryan O’Reilly would be nice, but the asking price won’t drop between now and the deadline.

Does trading Quinn Hughes make the Canucks better this season and lower their draft pick?
Sekeres and Price: Blake Price thinks the Quinn Hughes trade makes them better now and could land a potential top-five pick in the 2026 NHL draft and in the top 10 range.
“My concern here is, and I think this return for me is mediocre. I know Matt in particular is probably more positive about the return here. I’ll call it mediocre, but if you tell me they’re also picking in the top three or top five this year, my assessment in this trade gets better.”
But my concern here is that this trade makes them better right now, indeed. And⦔

NHL Rumors: Around Thanksgiving in the US, Quinn Hughes told the Canucks he would not renew
Price “…if it’s too good for them right now, they get this catch back, which is fine with me, lowercase, f fine, and they pick ninth overall this year. I’m a lot less excited about what’s been accomplished for the Vancouver Canucks over the course of this season.”
