The New Jersey Devils and Jacob Markstrom want to work out a contract extension
The Fourth Period: The New Jersey Devils and Jacob Markstrom continue their contract extension talks on a multi-year deal. The 35-year-old is in the final year of his $6 million per deal. Both sides have said they want to resolve something.
Kevin Weekes reported last week that the Devils’ initial offer was $5 million per season, although the number of years was not stated.
League sources say Markstrom could be looking for more money, and he hopes to get a deal done soon. The Devils have plenty of cap space available for next season, currently around $18 million.

Where do the Montreal Canadiens and Lane Hutson go next?
TSN: Pierre LeBrun was asked about the chances of Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens getting an extension before their season opener Wednesday night. LeBrun notes that the sides have tried, and about 10 days ago the Canadiens made an eight-year offer that may involve some deferred money. Hutson was not interested in deferring money.
“So where do they go from here? I think both sides have backed off a bit, which is probably what they needed to bring the temperature down in these talks. Yes, in a perfect world they would have an extension now, but they have all year. He’s a restricted free agent next summer and the Habs will want to protect their salary cap culture that they had with their core players and they hope they can work out a deal at some point come with a very special player. “
TSN: Darren Dreger was asked about the likelihood of Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens getting an extension before their season opener Wednesday night. Dreger says that’s unlikely and he doesn’t see them closing anytime soon. There is some hope that Canadiens GM Kent Hughes and Hutson’s agents have a meeting as early as Thursday.
NHL news: Kyle Connor signs eight-year extension with Winnipeg
“But honestly, Gino, there’s no guarantee that that meeting will happen. We know over the last few months, weeks, that there have been negotiations on and off. We know that this has been an emotionally charged situation at times between the Habs and their young defenseman. So I think everyone at this point is just trying to lower the temperature in the process and calm things down.”
The Canadiens are aiming for eight years, while Hutson may push for six years.
