The Montreal Canadiens are in wait-and-see mode with Patrik Laine and an extension

“And the other guy to watch, Patrik Laine, too. UFA, at the end of the season. They had conversations in the summer. They revived that a little bit in preseason, but I think everyone is in a wait-and-see mode with Laine before they decide what path to take with him.”
You know, read between the tea leaves or the lines or whatever. He needs to produce, and maybe a little bit more on the more five-on-five versus the power play. And if you can do that consistently, I think those conversations will gain momentum. But that remains to be seen now.”
NHL News: Utah Mammoth extend Logan Cooley
Later in the season, the New Jersey Devils may have to look at moving goaltender Nico Daws
New Jersey hockey now: 24-year-old New Jersey Devils goaltender Nico Daws may be NHL-ready. Currently he doesn’t need waivers, but if he is recalled and spends 30 days in the NHL or plays in 10 games, he will need waivers next time.
David Pagnotta said on the Devils Rink Report that there could be some interest from teams in Dawes in the future.
“I think a lot of teams have strengthened themselves with their goaltending, both in the NHL and in the AHL,” Pagnotta said. “Barring injury, or unless the wheels fall off completely, Daws could be considered a potential target down the road.”
The Devils probably wouldn’t want to lose Daws to waivers for nothing.
“This is also calculated on the New Jersey side. You don’t want to expose a player who is generating interest because you could lose him for nothing,” Pagnotta explained. “Like Lukas Reichel. Didn’t want to lose him. They didn’t want to trade him for nothing because they knew they could at least get a piece back for him. Different circumstances, because I think the Devils would like to keep Daws in the organization. But you have to do your due diligence on all sides of the spectrum.”
NHL Rumors: Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers and the Edmonton Oilers
I think from the Devils’ perspective right now, if this becomes an issue later in the season, they will reevaluate to see where the league and other teams stand. There have been other goalkeepers available but I don’t feel this is a major problem or raises an eyebrow for the club.”
