NHL Rumors: Can Bobby McMann land the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round?

Could the Toronto Maple Leafs get a first-round pick for Bobby McMann?

Sportsnet: James Mirtle on the JD Bunkis Podcast, when asked if the Toronto Maple Leafs should trade pending UFA Bobby McMannand what they could get for him if they did make him available?

** NHLRumors.com transcription

Mirtle: “I think it’s probably quite high. You talk to him about the expansion. You see what’s happening here in these games, and if you feel close enough to it.”

But with the rumored $5 million per season figure, that makes me nervous. Because I think market value, look what Bobby McMahon has done. I think he’s more of a $4 million player. But if you go with a $5 million term for him, you’ve never seen him be successful in the playoffs. I think you sell a lot.

And I don’t know if you can get a first-round pick, but maybe you can get a first-round pick. The only tricky thing about the first round pick is that not many of the contenders want Bobby McMann getting a first round pick unless you go to 2027.

Leon Draisaitl didn’t say anything bad about the Edmonton Oilers play

Bunkis: “Which I think is (fine??) for the Leafs.

Mirtle: “So yeah, yeah. So maybe it’s the buzz that people think he’s worth what goalie Sherwood got from San Jose when they picked him up from Vancouver, which was two second-round picks. Which I think is a nice trade for the Leafs.”

Bunkis: “I think if you got an early second-round pick in this draft and a second one in the next for Bobby McMahon, you’d immediately sign up for that over even one first-round pick in 2027.

Mirtle: “A lot of the contenders don’t have an early second-round pick, right? Because their second-round pick is going to be at the back of the round. So, you know, it could be a mid-second round pick and one or two late second-round picks.”

So I know it’s not ideal. I think you’re trying to get the first round. I just don’t know if Bobby McMann is going to pull that off or not.

Bunkis: “Well, that’s the hard thing about the Edmonton rumors, right? Everyone’s basically already put him in an Oilers uniform. Like he’s from here and they need him. OK, but Edmonton doesn’t have exactly what Toronto needs.”

The only reason I would assume McMann has the asking price or the price we’re talking about is what we’ve all brought up, which is that you can add him to your team without having to pull out the scalpel and remove anything else of significance. It’s like he’s an easy fit because of that contract.

Which I think would say, yes, there is, there’s real value in that, even if you have to re-sign him. The idea that you can just pin him into your group without removing anyone else is huge.

Yes. I mean, the Leafs already have their retention slots, and I think whoever they trade should keep 50% of the deal. And so for Bobby McMann or Scott Laughton or even Simon Benoitthat is a man you deal with, and whom you want to keep. These are contracts that are suddenly less than the league minimum, and they are so easy to accommodate.

And things will get tougher for the contending teams with the salary cap in the playoffs. And it’s going to matter more that you get that retention. You get those low numbers. Otherwise you will have to deal with players you don’t want in the play-offs.

So I think this definitely adds some value. And all those years the Leafs have paid that extra fourth-round pick to get the retention, they should potentially be the beneficiaries of that this year as the guys trade.
