The Artemi Panarin train is slowly gaining steam
Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report: Of course we were destined to be in this position with Artemi Panarin. This time, the New York Rangers are just a few points away from a playoff spot. Still, it feels like so much more with the injuries to Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox. Shesterkin’s is more confusing given the lack of clarity of the timeline.
There are some big and small details here. Panarin has not agreed to anything except that he will not take a pay cut. He doesn’t shoot the puck like the Russian did two years ago. Panarin’s point production was around 1.1 points per game, which was solid. However, too many nights something seems wrong. We also saw this last year.
Others are looking at which teams could be a good fit for the Russian star. Washington immediately comes to mind when the capitals try to make plans for now and for the future. Carolina and Vegas always have a chance at these lotteries. An interesting team is Detroit, which has some prospects and is doing well. The Los Angeles Kings remain a wild card. They have tons of room for deadlines and parts to make a move possible. The Kings are stuck in the mud and need a big push. Panarin would provide that.
NHL Rumors: When Someone Talks Just to Talk?
The impression here is that we may have to wait.
What about Joonas Korpisalo?
Jimmy Murphy of RG.org: It’s no surprise that Joonas Korpisalo has been on the trade market. Maybe last weekend’s shutout will increase his value a bit. The goaltender was largely disappointing for Boston, while Jeremy Swayman rebounded just enough. Korpisalo has improved slightly over the past two campaigns, but not enough.
Since he’s always available, it feels like the contract is more of an issue here. There’s the 10-team trade clause, the $4 million salary, and yes, there are two years left on the deal.
NHL Rumors: Rangers and Jets and more
Boston feels like Michael DiPietro is hitting great form in Providence. Management wants to give the younger goaltender a long look in Beantown. When the San Jose Sharks acquired Laurent Brossoit, it closed a major window. Other teams are hesitant to acquire Korpisalo at best.
Frankly, that waiver option becomes more likely here than just a fallback choice.
