NHL Insider explains why McDavid contractter does not matter

Edmonton Oiler -Fans are waiting for Connor McDavid’s next contract with the team. Speculation is everywhere, from McDavid will sign within the month until he does a long -term agreement, or signed for a shorter term to keep the organization in the fire. NHL -Sinsider Frank Seravalli gave insight into what the extension of the superstar could look like – and why the term may not matter.

Recently speak, Seravalli noted that he could see McDavid signing an extension of four years or an eight -year -old, but he was not sure if the McDavid’s future would change with the oilers. Although an extension of eight years remains the signing that places all contract speculation behind the captain of the oilers for a huge part of his career, a shorter term deal McDavid gives the chance to leave if things don’t work. Anyway, Seravalli suggests an average annual value (AAV) that is projected between $ 16 million and $ 17.5 million.

“These are just ballparks,” warned Seravalli. “But I am not entirely convinced that it will be a four -year -old deal. I still think it is more logical to go for eight and be done with it.”

The logic behind a shorter deal can be strategic leverage. As Seravalli explained, McDavid holds all power. If the oilers do not meet expectations, especially in their all-in pushing for a Stanley Cup-Zou McDavid when the contract ends or even force a movement for that time.

However, he also thinks that McDavid has a similar lever for an eight -year -old deal.

“If, after four years or even three, he decides that the oilers can’t get it done, he can raise his hand and say,” I want to leave, “and they have no choice but to let it happen,” Seravalli said. The only potential obstacle for McDavid is that if he wants to work through trade, he has to work a no-move or no-trade clause in his contract (which is probably a given). In this way he was able to control the outcome of where he was traded, which would usually be the benefit of the free desk.

Seravalli added that signing a deal in the short term is not necessarily “a fire” under management no more “burns” than the urgency that already exists.
