NFT companies are actively recovering from the ‘NFT winter’ by pivoting from speculative digital art to practical utilities, gaming and brand integration. In an important step for the development of its crypto and NFT ecosystem, Yuga Labs, best known for its Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), has announced the acquisition of a maker platform from British company Improbable.

Yuga Labs acquires the Unreal Engine platform

In a December 26 blog post, Yuga Labs co-founder Greg Solano confirmed that he and his company have acquired the Unreal Engine platform. Unreal Engine is a powerful, real-time 3D creation tool developed by Epic Games for building games, movies, simulations, and interactive experiences. Known for its high-fidelity graphics and physics, it uses C++ and Blueprints visual scripting to power industry-standard productions on consoles, PC and mobile.

Unreal Engine is a product of Improbable, a British technology company founded in 2012 that specializes in distributed simulation software, metaverse infrastructure and virtual world development. It enables massive, complex, real-time simulations for gaming, defense and enterprise, with a focus on connecting communities and economies through cutting-edge technology. It’s free to use for students and creators, with a 5% royalty fee on gross revenue after a project earns its first $1 million USD.

In his post on This is a doubling down on our simple mission: build the best maker platform in crypto. A place where anyone can, with one click, create worlds, games and experiences that are massively multiplayer, curable and ready for launch,” he explains.

Founded in 2021, Yuga Labs is a leading Web3 and blockchain technology company best known for creating the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection. It focuses on digital collectibles, gaming and the metaverse (Otherside), with a valuation of over $4 billion. It aims to combine digital culture with blockchain technology through storytelling, community engagement and immersive experiences.

Yuga Labs and unlikely deal details

While much of the information about the deal is not being made public, the agreement includes obtaining a perpetual license for Improbable’s high-concurrency technology for the Otherside, as well as the transition of many of Improbable’s engineers and developers to Yuga Labs in the new year. The acquisition will allow Yuga Labs to fully integrate the technology internally, accelerate iterations and invest in Otherside and its creators for the long term.

The acquisition news has sparked excitement in the crypto community. Many users on X have expressed optimism about the future of Otherside and the entire metaverse ecosystem. By 2025, the metaverse market grew by over 20%, with a focus on Web3 games and decentralized economies. The acquisition of Unreal Engine could strengthen Yuga’s position compared to competitors such as Decentraland or The Sandbox.
