The Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant, located northwest of Cedar Rapids in Iowa, is moving forward with attempts to reopen in the late 2020s after it was closed in 2020 because of financial challenges.
Nuclear comeback
The plant is the third – and probably the last – nuclear reactor that is still in good enough for a restart, according to to CNBC.
The facility follows in the footsteps of two other reactors, Palisades in Michigan and Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, who are also on their way to resuming the operation in the coming years, provided that they receive approval from the nuclear regulating committee.

Recently, Nextera Energy, Inc. No The owner of the factory, received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Ferc) to reconnect Duane Arnold with the electric grid and is already aimed at a return to service at the end of 2028.
A Nextera spokesperson described the Ferc decision as a positive step, although there is considerable work to run the factory again.
Restarting the factory will be expensive – Nextera expects to invest to $ 100 million in 2025 alone. Efforts are made to order new transformers and to rebuild essential facilities, such as the cooling towers, administration and training buildings, all of which were previously dismantled.
Nuclear energy and large tech
The urge to bring Duane Arnold online again takes place as large technology companies look for more nuclear energy to provide their increasingly energy-intensive data centers used for the development of artificial intelligence.
Nextera hopes to secure a long-term Power-Pury agreement to support the restart, similar to how the restart of Three Mile Island is financed through a partnership with Microsoft.
“If we are successful in advance Duane, that naturally creates a hot bed of data center activity around that facility,” CEO of Nextera John Ketchum said about the company’s profit call.
