As so often has been in recent years, this year there was a new name on the Cheshire Women’s League trophy. There has only been one copy of a team that retains the title in the past 13 years, and during this time no fewer than eight different clubs have come to the table.
For the first time, the championship was won by Wilmslow Club Lindow, which completed their remarkable turnout by the competition structure, with the first team of their ladies in 2019 being Champions of Division 4. Heidi Cheadle took a lot of the headlines throughout the season and scored a competition record 777 runs, including four centuries. However, Lindow’s varied and exciting young bowling attack also played an important role.
Lindow did not have it all in their own way, lost two league matches en route, and you now have to go back to 2013 to find the last time that a Division 1 team went through an undefeated season. Chester Boughton Hall finished second and Leigh third.
In the very competitive top division it would always be a good team that was banned, and Stockport Georgians took good and a big escape from this, winning all their last three games when their position looked more than precarious. It was Nantwich who finally ended with the wooden spoon, and they will be replaced in next year’s top flight by Northop Hall.
The Joint Highste Wicket Takers in Division 1 were Carys Lambe by Chester Boughton Hall and Sarah Worsdale van Oakmere, with 18 each.
The successes of Lindow continued when their second team won Division 3 East, while the only teams in the hardball competitions ended with an undefeated record in division 4 West and Whalley Range in Division 4 East. The performance was also repeated by three of the six winners of the 5 softball competitions division: Widnes, Sale and Macclesfield. Didsbury was undefeated champions of the Senior T20 competition.
There were also important achievements for competition clubs in external competitions. Leyland became the first Cheshire League team that won a national competition by landing the place prize in the national knockout of the ECB.
Five of the Division 1 teams of the competition were chosen to play three from the Lancashire League-Om in the Thunder Cup, a new competition for northwestern England, organized by Lancashire CCC. It is important that the final of this competition was played in Old Trafford, especially the first time that a ladies’ club match has been played on the test field? They were stockport georgians who came here triumphantly and beat Leigh in the final with eight wickets.
