Captain cool (Captain Crunch) picked up his work in the middle of the race to score a very impressive first victory for the trainer, with Tim Williams in the Sulky.

The three -year -old is raced by Newman’s Uncle Mark and the estate of his deceased father Greg, who died in December last year.

Captain Cool had its first start since then and his excellent victory delivered a moment for the Newman family to cherish.

“The family was absolutely rapped because it is Dad’s horse,” said Newman.

“Mama made the journey down to see him today, so it was a pretty special victory.”

Captain Cool was purchased by the Newmans during the yearling of 2023 and received two starts at Nelson at the beginning of this year.

The three -year -old showed that he was ready to shoot at Oamaru on Sunday with two beautiful tests.

“He is a pretty nice horse, but he is still learning, and he has taken a bit of sports,” said Newman.

“He is a big horse and he should only get better and better.”

Captain Cool is the first winner of Newman of his new base in Yaldhurst.

The rider previously trained on a fierce Beach while working for the Robert and Jenna Dunn stable.

After a short period in Australia, Newman now works for Regan Todd.

That means he trains his team while working with Todd’s star horses such as Marketplace.

“I think Regan said that I could ride the market on the racing day, but I could have heard him wrong,” Newman joked.

“I had a few journeys behind him at work and he is clearly a very beautiful horse.”

“It’s great to be with Regan, he helped me with Captain Cool.”

Newman will probably not be seen that Marketplace, Captain Cool or other horses have in the near future.

De Ruiter is not going to jump in Sulky soon, even though he has 80 new -Zeeland winners to his name.

“I am not enough there, you always have to be there, so I thought I would take a bit back from driving at the moment.”

“Tim is almost every race there and he knows what to do, so I am happy to have him.”

Williams was a Treble of winners in Oamaru in Oamaru in Oamaru and Reining. After his victory with Captain Cool, the Reinsman Bar Louie led to victory in the Kurow Cup before he eliminated the final of Sunday with Riptide.
