Stayer Newfoundland regains its stamp on Sydney’s highs with Adelaide in target

It took 476 days and Adrian Bott was pleased to see the former Newfoundland import first find the winning post in the Listed Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm, albeit narrowly.

The son of Japanese sire Deep Impact impressed enough during his short career in Ireland to see the likes of Lloyd and Nick Williams put him on a Cups path to Australia and while they may have failed to win the Adelaide Cup last year when they finished as runners-up, this win spurs the seven-year-old to try again in March.

This second performance followed a fifth place finish at Randwick over 2000 meters on 27 December.

“He has been a very honest horse for us and our connections, and it is great to see him winning again,” Bott said.

“His first run was less than his best and that was a month ago. He seems to be doing well with his staggered races.

“There’s not a lot from him fitness-wise, but he seems to appreciate that and once he can get over some ground he needs the right races and the right conditions, so we’re choosing our target and today seemed like a good target for him.

“The Adelaide Cup has been the long-term plan for him and he ran really well in it last year and even had a big bad luck. He seems to have matured and improved a bit this time.”

While race favorite Future History ($2.60) led the way but faded on the straight, Newfoundland ($4.20) – ridden by Tim Clark – won by a nose margin over Age Of Sail ($10) with Elliptical ($6) 1¼ lengths away in third.

The Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) takes place on March 9 in Morphettville.
