Newey documentary tells story about career and move to Aston Martin | RACER

Adrian Newey will be the subject of a new documentary, telling the story of the legendary Formula 1 designer’s career and work with Aston Martin.

Working under the working title ‘Turbulence: The Greatest Mind in F1’, the documentary is co-produced by Artists Equity – including executive producers Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Kyle Wheeler – and by Whisper and Mark Stewart Productions (MSP).

Working with F1 and Aston Martin, the focus will be on his attempts to turn his latest team into a championship contender, while also reflecting on the highs and lows of his career, from the dominant years at Red Bull to the death of Ayrton Senna in a Williams in 1994.

“When Mark Stewart approached me about making a documentary film, although I was flattered, I wasn’t sure at first whether I would accept it,” Newey said. “One of the moving things about my 2017 autobiography, though, is the number of letters I’ve received talking about how much the book sparked their interest and appreciation for race car design and engineering, how interactive car design is with the drivers, and how much success is about mindset.

“Hopefully this film can portray the passion, workmanship and strength of mind that goes into bringing an F1 car to the grid. The film charts the challenges I faced when joining a new team in early March to prepare for what is arguably the biggest regulatory change in F1 history. The film also looks at the story behind my career to date and how it has helped me prepare for this enormous challenge.”

“It’s been a wild ride so far, but Formula 1 never stands still. I hope the film will capture some of that restless energy and our constant pursuit of better performance.”

While the documentary appears to be heavily focused on Aston Martin’s current journey, it will also include footage from the past and tell the latest offering of wider F1 stories within both the UK and US entertainment markets.
