Newcastle United’s injury update brings good and bad news on Thursday

An injury update from Newcastle United on Thursday has brought good and bad news.

On the positive side is news about Yoane Wissa.

Craig Hope for The mail says a big step forward has been taken this week as the striker trains with his Newcastle United teammates for the first time,

The Mail’s man says that yesterday (Wednesday, November 26, 2025) Yoane Wissa was involved as part of the group.

After a number of delays during his recovery from the posterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered on international duty, this new report says there was great relief on the training pitch to see the striker finally able to start training with the rest of the players.

As Eddie Howe has said repeatedly, he wants to be absolutely certain that Yoane Wissa is as prepared and fit as humanly possible before he risks returning to play.

The Mail report says that if all goes to plan, Wissa could be ready to be involved by the time the derby match against Sunderland takes place on Sunday, December 14.

These are Newcastle United’s next eight matches; Everton (A) November 29, Spurs (H) December 2, Burnley (H) December 6, Bayer Leverkusen (A) December 10, Sunderland (A) 14 Deember, Fulham (H) December 17, Chelsea (H) December 20 and Man U (A) December 26.

Hard to imagine Eddie Howe risking Yoane Wissa in a derby against the Mackems, even from the bench. So if this sort of timetable proved accurate, I would have thought Wissa playing a role in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham on Wednesday, December 17 would sound more likely.

On the negative side, this report from The Mail says Kieran Trippier could be out for up to four weeks.

It was previously reported that it was a mild hamstring injury, which has kept the England international out of the last two games, but Craig Hope says he has heard it is something more serious than that, resulting in an absence of three or four weeks.

The report states that the tension was raised in training last Friday (November 21), so four weeks would take us until around the Fulham Cup match and the Chelsea Premier League match that follows.

Trippier has already missed two games and with seven more games in the three weeks leading up to Christmas, the fact that you are still competing in so many competitions means you could miss a lot of games if you are injured for even a relatively short time.
