Looking at this Newcastle team against Barcelona.
Only hours to go before Champions League Football starts again in St James’ Park.
Newcastle United wants to make the successive victories.
A clean sheet and Nick Woltemade score on his debut, enough to beat Wolves.
Nobody will complain if we see a repeat of it tonight.
As a reminder, this was the Newcastle Team V Wolves:
Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Tonali, Bruno, Joelinton, Barnes, Woltemade, Murphy
On Wednesday at his press conference before the game, Eddie Howe indicated that the only two Newcastle players are missing tonight due to an injury tonight, Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey.
Eddie Howe has again the same players that were available on Saturday, plus Anthony Gordon, his suspension of three games that do not apply in the Champions League.
Many people often say about not changing a winning team.
Indeed, Eddie Howe could possibly go with that reasoning tonight. However, I don’t think so.
The NUFC head coach has shown in the past that he will do what he thinks is best, including making changes to a winning team. No case of only because of it, more a case of Eddie Howe willing to be ruthless, when certain players become available and/or he believes that another team selection (and formation …?) Is better suited for the next opponent.
Undoubtedly, many of you will disagree, but I believe that the opportunities prefer Eddie Howe, a few surprise changes, both formation and staff.
My predicted Newcastle team against Barcelona:
Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Livramento, Tonali, Bruno, Joelinton, Gordon, Elanga
If I am good, these would be three changes from Saturday. With Botman, Gordon and Elanga who come in, which means that Barnes, Woltemade and Murphy would fall on the couch.
My reasoning?
I think that instead of playing a third central defender, a more defensive view from Eddie Howe means, precisely opposite.
I think Eddie Howe will want to come to Barcelona and have a high press of the first whistle, a bit like happened against PSG (albeit when he does not play three/five at the back).
If Gordon and Elanga are played as two attackers, they become freedom of movement and an opportunity to use their pace as much as possible. Both in terms of closing and when United is in possession. Elanga has played this role in the past and did this with Sweden in this month’s internationals. While Gordon played the middle for NUFC and for the England younger than 21 years old when they won their euro.
You then have the usual midfield trio that they support, plus wing backs that continue. Tino Livarismento certainly plays, although I was not sure whether in my predicted Newcastle team against Barcelona, whether it will be on the right or left, also play with Trippier or Hall. If I am correct with the formation, then Eddie Howe could go with both. I just went to the side of Trippier to stay in and Hall stays out. I would be happy with playing.
I think this potential/predicted Newcastle team would check many boxes, plus of course surprising Hansi film and Barcelona.
Personally, I think we will probably get more from Nick Woltemade as an impact sub tonight. Moreover, the fact that we need Nick Woltemade is from Sunday in Bournemouth, when Anthony Gordon will be missing. Would it be ideal to expect Woltemade to start three games in a week, especially after starting both games for Germany?
With Yoane Wissa at least after the international break of October, Eddie Howe will take care of Nick Woltemade.
Plus of course Anthony Elanga had a little rest, only the last ten minutes on Saturday.
Just like the fact that Sven Botman is a class act when he plays.
Moreover, the use of the team is of course something that we have to expect regularly this season.
If my Newcastle United Giswerk has proved to be accurate, you also have a renewed Murphy and Barnes for Sunday in Bournemouth, as well as what they can hand in from the bank tonight.
