Manchester United have sent shockwaves across the Santiago Bernabeu after launching a raid to sign Real Madrid star Eder Militao, according to the latest report from Spain.
United table an offer
Transfers reveal that the Red Devils have submitted a “formal offer” worth €40 million to sign Militao.
The 28-year-old defender is seen by United as a leader with a wealth of experience at the highest level – exactly the profile they want to strengthen their backline with.
At his best, Militao is one of Europe’s best centre-backs, with excellent defensive instincts and strong technical and tactical attributes. However, since joining Madrid from FC Porto in 2019, he has endured a relentless list of injuries despite his obvious talents when fit.
The Brazilian international has that Missed 138 games for club and country in the Spanish capital, with two consecutive cruciate ligament injuries – to both knees – the most serious he has suffered.
This physical vulnerability makes Militao an interesting choice for United, as Lisandro Martinez has faced similar problems, while Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt are prone to minor injuries.
However, Maguire’s contract expires at the end of the season. Talks have been held about an extension but a new deal is yet to be offered, with INEOS reluctant to renew an incoming 33-year-old defender on high wages.
Should the England centre-back leave, a player of Militao’s skills will provide a major boost to United’s defense, even if there are concerns over his ability to stay fit.
Madrid is considering a sale
Transfers claims United’s bid is ‘forced’ [Madrid’s] board to sit down and consider different options about their defense.
Militao is a player who is “highly valued” at the Bernabéu, both for his influence on the pitch and in the dressing room. But it is also accepted that his sale would ‘free up salary space and create room for future transfers’.
An offer of €40 million is seen as attractive, but does not enter the territory of an ‘offer that cannot be refused’.
It is also believed that Militao remains fully focused on finishing the season as strongly as possible with Los Blancos, meaning the Brazilian has no interest in forcing a move to United.
Final thoughts
An outlay of £35 million for a world-class centre-back in his prime, currently plying his trade for the biggest club in the world, is a reasonable sum, even for a player approaching 30.
United’s defense will need an injection of experience if Maguire is to leave, with the continued development of Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro considered a priority at Old Trafford. Militao would be the perfect complement to the two defensive starlets.
However, his injury record is beyond doubt; it’s a sure red flag regardless of his talents when fit.
The idea of leaving Madrid for Manchester is also questionable given the two clubs’ respective successes in recent years, with INEOS keen to move away from the model of signing older players from Europe’s elite.
