Willock has struggled for consistency in recent years, which has resulted in him struggling to hold down a regular starting spot in Newcastle’s midfield. Injuries also played a role, which is why the Tyneside club could cash in now to avoid losing him for a lower fee later.
Crystal Palace are eyeing the move for Joe Willock as Newcastle consider an exit
Crystal Palace are said to be interested in signing Willock in January, and according to Pete O’Rourke (via Football insider), Newcastle would welcome any offer for the former Arsenal player.
“I think if they get a good offer for Joe Willock, it’s something they would definitely consider. He’s probably the fifth or sixth choice under Eddie Howe at the moment. To be fair to Willock, he’s had problems with injuries that have prevented him from getting into the side regularly.”
“Crystal Palace could be a good option for him. It’s clear that Oliver Glasner will be keen to strengthen his squad when the January transfer window opens. Joe Willock is a versatile player. He can play in central midfield or he can play out wide and he has proven himself in the Premier League too, so it could be a good option for them. I’m sure a few clubs will be looking at Willock’s situation in the January window.”
Should Newcastle sell Joe Willock in January?
It makes sense for Newcastle to sell Willock before his value drops as he is not a key player for Howe. However, it is likely that a replacement will have to be secured first as it would make little sense for him to leave mid-season without another midfielder arriving at St James’ Park.
