We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match reviews and comments from players after Newcastle 2 Nottingham Forest 0.
A good victory and a good – not great – performance. But three points and a clean slate to take the international break will do me fine.
Despite all the gloom around the city, Forest gave us a good game without putting us under real pressure.
Our midfield and the defense helped to make the afternoon -free of our keeper.
Although some players will score more than others, as always, I would say this was a good team performance.
We held the task for 90 minutes, we were patient and we got our reward.
A side issue, but I thought two of our old boys – Sels and Anderson – were the best players of Forest.
Nick Pope 7
Didn’t really have more than a few half -hearted shots to deal with, but was confident on crosses.
His distribution will never be the highest rank, but he has not committed any crying.
Kieran Trippier 7
With Lewis Hall who becomes a member of Livramento on the treatment table, Tripps can expect a lot of playing time today.
He was for the most part today. Even at the age of 35 he still wants to go to the park.
Malick Thiaw 8
It was love at first sight for fans in Newcastle when Malick Thiaw first set up black and white and the love affair did not end up.
He has speed, he has time and he has skills. Never looked confused. Quality player.
Sven Botman 7
He had to throw himself against Arsenal last week for a barrage of shots, but this was a much more relaxed afternoon.
Big Sven was composed and insured. Always seemed to be in the right place.
And burned 7
BDB is – apparently – 6 kg heavier than when he regularly left for us.
But in the absence of Tino and Hall, he is well filled in.
A few times beaten for pace, but otherwise pretty good. Was not afraid to fight when needed.
Bruno Guimaraes 9
When I did this last weekend, I said we lost midfield to Arsenal.
Well, this week our midfield was an important role in victory and Bruno was the choice of the couple.
He never stopped, did not give the ball away (he has a little recent form for that), a Belter scored when we needed it and won the fine for the second.
Player of the game for me; His best performance for a while.
Sandro Tonali 8
Not far behind Bruno.
A lot of energy, saw the steps that others did not do, and was silky on the ball. A huge talent.
Joelinton
I don’t know if Joe is trying to adjust his game, but he seems less combative than him.
He still had a good game, passed well and came close to scoring a few times.
Anthony Elangi 5
I will give Elanga the benefit of the doubt and say that this was not the ideal game for him.
If we had played Ange’s Spurs side, he would have had a space of the Gobi desert to come across, but Forest defended deep.
That said, he sometimes kept it with the ball for too long and did not create much. He’s not there yet.
Nick Woltemade 8
Being stronger, becoming faster, becoming fitter.
He plays with his back to Doel, which seems to give defenders a license to grab him, to pull him and kick him whenever they want, safe in the knowledge that a referee will never punish them as useless as Peter Bankes will never punish them.
But it also enables him to play others and he has the ability to do that in a great effect.
Scored a shoveled fine to strengthen the victory. It is noticeable that we hardly talk about Isak.
Anthony Gordon 6
Played pretty well in the first half.
Came in search of the ball, played a number of fresh Firs-time fits and kept under pressure-in-hun defense.
Faded a bit in the second half.
Subs:
Jacob Murphy 6
Did what Elanga didn’t do, by getting a few early balls in the box.
But he would have had two assists for Sels. Only 20 minutes later, but they were good.
Harvey Barnes 6
Also looked pretty good.
Forest chased the game when he rose, but he looked ambitious and immediately.
William Osula NVT (not long enough to judge)
I’m not sure if he touched the ball, but was a nuisance. Up 2-0 up, I think that’s fine
Lewis Miley NVT (not long enough to assess)
