Dunedin will host even more world-class international hockey this summer, with Hockey New Zealand confirming that India will take part in the upcoming Summer of Hockey series in January; the originally planned Four Nations event transforms into an exciting Five Nations spectacle.
The addition of India, combined with the introduction of a New Zealand A (NZA) squad, elevates the Summer of Hockey to one of the most exciting international tournaments to be held in Aotearoa in recent years. Fans can now look forward to six days of competition, with great performances from New Zealand, USA, Japan, Korea, India and NZA.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Dunedin sports fans,” said Michelle Hollands, CEO Hockey NZ. “Adding India – one of the most passionate hockey nations in the world – and creating space for our NZA to compete with leading international teams is a huge win for the sport and for our community. It means more competition, more development and more unforgettable moments for fans.”
Expanded format, greater opportunities
What started as a four-day event has grown into a six-day international hockey festival. The expanded schedule provides greater playing opportunities for teams and gives spectators more opportunities to witness high-intensity international matches.
For the NZA team, the series provides a valuable platform to test themselves against top nations, building depth and experience within New Zealand’s high-performance trajectory. With India joining the line-up, the level of competition rises even further, paving the way for fast, skilled and fiercely contested hockey.
