Cameron Norrie was the first of the three British who participated in the US Open in the men’s singles, to reach the second round of the last Grand Slam of the year and was accompanied by Jack Draper with Jacob Fearnley to play his opener Tuesday.

It was a solid match and I am happy to be through. Cameron Norrie

Norrie, a former British No. 1, who played open in his eighth US, stood opposite Sebastian Korda a player he had lost three times in their previous four meetings.

“It’s not a good match for me,” De Lefty admitted to learning his draw, “I really have to play aggressive against him,”

And he did that when the couple met each other on day two at court 17, Norrie’s favorite court, at Flushing Meadows.

Currently ranked in the world 35, he took the game on the American from the start his opponent under pressure in the heat of the afternoon sun to reach the second round for the fifth time after Korda was forced to be injured with the score at 7-5 6-4 after 107 minutes.

“I feel bad for Sebi,” Norrie told the crowd after Korda, who had also admitted a walkover in the Winston Salem last week, had retired. “He has been out all summer, he is a great talent and he defeated me the last twice that we played.”

Korda certainly kept Norrie busy in the opening set despite the aggressive approach to the Brit, which was eventually rewarded with the first break of the game for a 6-5 lead when Korda failed a foreign wide.

He then claimed the opening set after 52 minutes and quickly moved in the second when the trainer Korda attended several times for a lower back problem.

Despite the problem, Korda continued to save a few set points while serving at 3-5 and forcing three break opportunities when Norrie served for the set, which he then claimed at his fourth attempt.

Before Korda it turned out that too great an obstacle to try to turn with the problem he suffered, so he decided that enough was enough to give Norrie his 10th victory at Flushing Meadows.

“This felt like nothing today, so it was nice to feel prepared,” said Norrie, who had trained in the heat of Texas for the event. “It was a solid match and I am happy to be through.”

In the meantime, Jack Draper, British No. 1, had a few problems in his 6-4 7-5 6-7 (7) 6-2 victory over the Federico Gomez of Argentina while struggling to join Norrie in round two.

Last year, the current world no. 5 vomited several times during his semi -final with Jannik Sinner, an act he emulated on Monday during his three -hour victory.

“I felt physically good, potentially a little nervous energy,” said Draper. “I have always had some problems with my intestines, could just come again, a little nervous tension.”

In other early action on day two, the young Brazilian star Joao Fonseca 51 winners in a 7-6 (3) 7-6 (5) 6-3 triumph against Miomir Kecmanovic.

“The first round is always a bit more tense,” said the 19-year-old Fonseca in his press conference after the game. “At the start of the game he got an early break, but I got it back and in the Tie-Break I played very well and I raised my level. I think the most important thing I was to play well in the important points today.

“When they came, I raised my level, so that is really positive today. The mentality to stay positive and to concentrate on the next point, that was really important.”

Casper Ruud, a former finalist at the US Open, started his campaign well when he eliminated the non-SEEDED Austrian 6-1 6-2 7-6 (5) to achieve his third victory over him in three meetings.

“He struggled a bit in the first two sets,” Ruud said about the game. “I got a lot of free points. I played well, aggressive as I could and also got a lot of balls and he made some mistakes.”
