The Edmonton Oilers’ search for a new goaltender has taken on a life of its own in recent weeks. It first sounded like the Oilers and Blues were having legitimate discussions about Jordan Binnington, and then it was said they were also very interested in Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry.
However, in the days that followed, reasons continued to emerge as to why Edmonton might not be able to make a deal for one reason or another. When it comes to Binnington in particular, insiders suggested their recent history with the Blues regarding the 2024 offer sheets could preclude a trade.
Combine that with his uninspiring play of late, and the rumors start to die down. While all of these obstacles are already in play, we learned of another potential problem in these trade talks on Wednesday, when Andy Strickland revealed that the Oilers are actually on Binnington’s no-trade list.
Strickland said:
“Okay, so from what I understand, Binnington has a limited no-trade, there’s a certain number of teams on the list… From what I understand, Edmonton is on the list of teams he wouldn’t accept a trade for anyway,”
The 32-year-old Binnington is in the fifth season of the six-year, $36 million extension he signed with the Blues in 2021, which includes the aforementioned 18-team no-trade list.
Don’t completely rule out Jordan Binnington for the Oilers
While this news only adds to the several other factors keeping Edmonton from landing Binnington, the odds remain less than zero that this could still happen.
Of course, that would be due to the fact that Binnington was able to waive his no-trade clause to join the Oilers with the idea of chasing another Stanley Cup.
His no-trade list would have been set at the time he signed the contract, so a lot has changed in the nearly five years since, including Edmonton going to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, demonstrating a true championship potential that wasn’t there before.
It still seems unlikely that this will happen, but it can’t be ruled out, especially if things don’t improve in St. Louis and the Oilers continue to work their way toward a deal.
