The president of Nepal Ramchandra Paudel has dissolved the parliament and called for new elections on March 5, after a week of deadly violence That culminated in the appointment of the first female prime minister of the country in the meantime.
The announcement came only a few hours after Paudel former chief judge Sushila Karki appointed to lead the country, after the deadly anti-graph protests that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
The President “Satisfied the House of Representatives … and adopted on March 5, 2026, Thursday before the elections”, according to a statement from the President’s office.
Karki was appointed after two days of intense negotiations between Paudel, army chef Ashok Raj Sigdel and the protest leaders behind Nepal’s worst unrest in years, causing at least 51 people to death and more than 1,300 injured.
The southern neighbor of Nepal, India, said it hoped that developments would help promote peace and stability.
“Warm congratulations to the Dear Sushila Karki Ji for taking the office of the interim government of Prime Minister of Nepal. India is fully dedicated to the peace, progress and prosperity of the brothers and sisters of Nepal,” said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post about X.
Gene protests, disagreement policy
The land -wide protests were fueled by a ban on social media that has since been reversed. The violence only went after Oli resigned on Tuesday.
Nepal has been struggling with political and economic instability since the abolition of his monarchy in 2008, while a lack of jobs is driving millions of young people to look for work abroad.
Karki is known for its insistence on integrity and the need for an independent judiciary.
The 73-year-old came to the fore as the leading candidate of many young representatives who led the protest movement who selected her via online platform agreement.
