We deal with quite a few recall notices that address a range of strange manufacturing defects, but this one might top the list. Nissan is recalling 41,797 2025 Sentras because they may have visible air bubbles in the laminate layer of the windshield. While this doesn’t necessarily sound catastrophic, depending on the location of the bubbles, the condition may not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FVMSS) 205. This standard prohibits bubbles or defects that extend further than 13mm from the outer edge of the windshield because it can obscure the driver’s forward view, which is poor.
The good news is that Nissan estimates that only 2.2% of the 41,797 Sentras included in this recall are actually affected by the defect, and based on supplier data, no other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles are affected. Dealers should already be aware of the recall, and Sentra owners should already be able to enter their VIN into the database NHTSA Reminder tool to see if their car is part of the recall.
Owners should be notified of the recall by January 15
The solution to the recall is simple: dealers inspect the windshield for air bubbles and if they are detected, they will replace the windshield free of charge for both parts and labor. Nissan estimates the replacement will take about 2.5 hours, so it won’t cause much inconvenience to owners.
The defect was first reported during a routine yard audit at Nissan’s plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, when a technician discovered air bubbles trapped between the two panes of glass and the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film on the windshield of a 2025 Sentra. Nissan subsequently launched an investigation with supplier Vitro, which revealed that the bubble-type delamination may have been caused by foreign particles trapped between the glass panes and the PVB film, which could cause separation between the components, which could lead to bubbles. The root cause may have been due to misaligned positioning pins in the windshield glass molds, although the problem was corrected.
Nissan plans to notify owners of the recall on January 15, 2026, although VINs are already searchable on the NHTSA website. Nissan is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents or injuries associated with this issue.
