The stage is set for a high-stakes face-off in the upcoming vice-presidential elections, with the reigning NDA Fielding veteran BJP leader and former Governor CP Radhakrishnan against the candidate of opposition India Bloc, former Supreshan Reddy Supreme Court. The competition, planned for Tuesday, is seen as a direct battle between the two most important political alliances prior to the next round of national politics.
Polling will be held in the parliament house between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with members of the parliament cast their vote through a secret vote. Counting starts from 6 p.m. and the results are expected to be declared the same evening, so that the road is cleared for the curse of the new vice president of the country.
The competition in numbers
The electoral college for the vice -presidential elections consists of 781 MPs (238 from Rajya Sabha and 542 from Lok Sabha; one Lok Sabha and six Rajya Sabha seats are currently empty). The majority is 391.
The NDA recommends 425 MPs and also has the support of the YSR Congress Party (11 MPS), which brings its count to 436. The Opposition India Bloc is now supported by 324 MPs.
Although the NDA is expected to win, the margin will probably be narrower than in 2022, when Jagdeep Dhankhar Margaret Alva defeated with 346 votes. Political analysts say that the difference could be 100-125 votes this time.
Candidates at a glance
The NDA has removed CP Radhakrishnan (67), a BJP veteran from Tamil Nadu and the current governor of Maharashtra. A double Lok Sabha Member of Coimbatore during the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is projected as an experienced and untouched leader who is suitable for presiding the Rajya Sabha.
Challenging him is B Sudershan Reddy (79), the nominee of the India Bloc and a retired judge of the Supreme Court from Telangana. Known for Milestone Opinion-Including the explanation of Salwa Judum supported by the State, Reddy, Reddy is placed as a champion of social, economic and political justice.
In a video occupation on the MPs on Sunday, Reddy insisted on them to go beyond party cycle and the competition to mention a voice for the ‘Spirit of India itself’.
Who supports who?
On the prevailing side, the NDA has protected the support of the YSR Congress Party, which has 11 MPs, who further strengthens its number. Moreover, AAM Aadmi Party MP SWATI Maliwal is also expected to vote for the NDA candidate, which gives the Alliance extra confidence.
Among the parties who choose to stay away, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has announced that it will boycott the elections. BRS floor leader Suresh Reddy said that the decision reflected the opposition of the party to both the center and the government of Telangana and the last accused of harassing her workers. He also pointed out that a Minister of Union from Telangana had publicly said that the NDA did not need BRS support, which strengthened the decision of the party to abstain.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has also logged out of the game. Party Member of Parliament Sasmit Patra explained that after consultation with President Naveen Patnaik and senior leaders, the decision was made to stay at the same distance from both national alliances at the same distance. The BJD, he emphasized, would continue to concentrate on the development and well -being of Odisha’s 4.5 Crore people.
In the meantime, the position of some independent and smaller parties remains uncertain. Three of the seven independent people in the Sabha Lok still have to explain their choice, while parties such as the Shiromani Akali Dal, ZPM and VOTTP, with one MP each, have not clarified their position.
How voting will work
The election will be carried out by a secret mood, with MPs who are free to vote as they wish, because no party wip applies. However, votes usually correspond to party lines, although cross-voting has occurred in earlier elections.
Ballot papers will bear the names of both candidates. MPs must mark their choice by writing ‘1’ in addition to their preferred candidate, using Indian figures, Roman figures or figures from an Indian language – but not in words. To prevent invalid voices, both alliances have held fake polls and training sessions for their members of parliament.
Preparation for Poll Day
Both camps make last-minute efforts to guarantee maximum participation and valid votes. On the NDA side, all MPs were invited tomorrow at 9.30 am for breakfast meetings. Senior Ministers will organize MPs from their respective states: Shivraj Singh Chouhan will meet MPs from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Arjun Ram Meghwal will organize Rajasthan MPS, and Nityanand Rai will organize MPS van Bihar.
For the voice process, the NDA Kiren Rijiju, Shrikant Shinde and Ram Mohan Naidu has appointed his polling stations. Nasir Hussain, Manickam Tagore and Shaktisinh Gohil will serve as a polling agents for the India Bloc.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the first to vote tomorrow morning before he left for Punjab, followed by members of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
What the following
The election was necessary due to the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as vice president. The winner of tomorrow’s elections will be the 14th Vice president of India and chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
While the NDA resembles the victory, abstentions and possible cross votes can shorten the margin, making the outcome less emphatic than in the last elections.
