During the last meeting of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Oversight Committee, the final vote for champion selection criteria was unanimously adopted with the use of the NCAA Power Index (NPI) for the 2025-26 season.
The NPI replaces the pair, which had been in use since the 2013-14 season. One of the benefits of the NPI is that the Ice Hockey Oversight Committee of the NCAA Division I now has the opportunity to adjust important pieces of the formula (dials) to improve the selection process. Kies are set before the start of the competitive report and can be re -evaluated on an annual basis if necessary.
“The committee is delighted to implement the NPI for the 2025-26 season,” said Tim Troville, chairman of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee and Senior Associate Director of Athletics at Harvard, in a statement. “We spent months taking a deep dive in the figures from each of the last four seasons with the aim of removing potential mathematical anomalies from the selection process. We had countless discussions with commissioners and coaches of the conference and are really satisfied with the process and the result.
The NPI functions in a similar way such as the pair -wise, and the hockey committee has spent hours comparing different calculations before they eventually settle on the dials. The dials include winning percentage, strength of schedule, quality wrinkles, a mechanism to tackle games that come in overtime and a minimum number of victories that must be incorporated into the ranking calculation.
The NPI guide plates for the 2025-26 season are as follows:
- Win percentage / strength of schedule – 25% / 75%
- Home-Away win/Loss-1.2/0.8 (regular season), 1.0/1.0 (late season)
- Quality gain – 51
- Quality gain more – 0.5
- Overtime – 60/40 (regular season), 100/0 (late season)
- Minimal victories – 12
In addition to the dials, the Commission has also chosen to remove the requirement that teams earn a winning percentage of at least .500 to be eligible for a large berth.
