The NCAA Oversight Committee voted on Thursday in favor of a single transfer portal window in January. This new model, if it is approved by the administrative committee, would replace the previous system with two separate winter and spring transfer windows.
The January window would be opened on January 2 and the last 10 days. The Administrative Committee must give its final decision before 1 October to give the change affect in January 2026.
The timing of the new window is important because it is contrary to the current 12-team College Football Playoff schedule. If the January -window was opened on January 2, 2026, it means that the first day that the players could enter the portal, less than 24 hours after the quarterfinals Tour of the Playoff of 2026 College Football would come.
The transfer period of 10 days would extend by the semi-final, which takes place from 8-9 January, and a week before the Football Playoff National Championship College ended on January 19. The current two-window transfer model also conflicts the play-off of the University Football-Het Winter Window for the first round and also offers a new opportunity for players to transfer to the conclusion of spring in April.
The approved 10-day model of the Supervisory Committee is also a drastic decrease compared to the 30 total days that players currently have to enter the transfer portal.
Thursday’s recommendation would also make a recruitment period throughout the month of December. The committee has also recommended to return to the date that student athletes can first receive written offers of financial assistance or settlement-related benefits from the current date from 1 August to 15 November of their last year in high school.
