NCAA investigates sports betting violations against 13 college basketball players in Six Division I programs

The NCAA has announced that the violations pursues from sports betting rules with 13 athletes in six basketball programs for college: Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, Temple, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State. The enforcement staff of the NCAA would have discovered some student athletes “betting on and against their own teams”, in addition to other allegations for points differences.

This is on the heels of the Mykell Robinson and Jalen Weaver from Fresno State, alongside San Jose State’s Steven Vasquez Are eligible for permanently withdrawn earlier this week for gambling in itself.

“Through the extensive integrity monitoring program and the network of sources of the NCAA, enforcement staff became aware of unusual gambling activities around regular season games played by these teams,” the NCAA announced in a release. “The enforcement staff succeeded those reports and substantiated – in some cases, via SMS messages, direct messages on social media platforms and other equipment proof – that violations had occurred.”

The NCAA noted that the schools and the current coaching staff “were not reportedly involved in the violations”.

The state of Arizona is the only Power-Conference School that is now connected to the probe of the NCAA. The basketball program for men was previously engaged in a pointed scandal in men’s basketball in the mid -nineties when one of the best players, Stevin “Hedake” Smith, tensioned together with teammate Isaac Burton to shave in selected games for a book on the campus for dozens of thousands.

The school provided a statement to CBS Sports on Thursday: “Arizona State University is aware of the NCAA investigation and the outcome with regard to a former student athlete who is no longer registered with ASU. The university has fully cooperated with all questions and was in no way involved.”

The former state player in Arizona, who is said to be involved in unacceptable gambling activities, is BJ Freeman, a source told Matt Norlander of CBS Sports. Freeman was a shooting keeper who had an average of 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists in 22 starts before he was kicked off the team at the end of February because of what ASU revealed at the time, was harmful to the program. Freeman, who started his career at Milwaukee, publicly announced his dedication to UCF at the end of April, but the school never acknowledged that he was part of her program.

The run -up to Thursday’s Fallout is well documented. Hysier Miller, the most important scorer of Temple in 2023-24, was investigated on alleged points peel. Miller, who switched to Virginia Tech for the 2024-25 season, was rejected from the Hokies before he played a single game.

Accounts connected to a gambling ring under federal research For his participation in two NBA Betting cases were also bound by “unusual bet activity” on North Carolina A&T, Mississippi Valley State and Oost -Michigan last season. North Carolina A&T has suspended three basketball players – including the top two scorers in the season (Landon Glasper and Ryan Forrest) for “Treating team rules” in January, but Glasper told CBS Sports that he ‘never gambled’. Glasper was transferred to Southern Miss last spring, while Forrest is still in the transfer portal.

The same bills that are linked in the probe were also involved in the suspect gambling activity that placed large bets on prop betting in which former Toronto Raptors Jontay Porter were involved during the 2023-24 season and former Hornets guard Terry Rozier in 2023, ESPN reported. Porter was started from the competition, while Rozier has still not been charged or directly accused of misconduct.

“The NCAA monitors more than 22,000 competitions every year and remains aggressive risks of competition -integrity risks,” said NCAA President Charlie Baker in a release. “I am grateful for the ruthless work of the NCAA enforcement team and for the cooperation of the schools in these matters. The rise of sports bets creates more opportunities for athletes in sport to enter into this unacceptable behavior, and although legalized sports bets are here to reduce this integrity risk.

Matt Norlander and Kyle Boone from CBS Sports have contributed to this report.
