Nava launches a bid for the fifth Challenger title of the season in Montevideo

Emilio Nava wants to end his season in style. Entering the Uruguay Open this week at No. 88 in the PIF ATP rankings, Nava began his quest for a season-leading fifth ATP Challenger Tour title on Tuesday.

The third-seeded American started his campaign in Montevideo in emphatic fashion, beating Daniel Dutra da Silva 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round. Nava dropped just five points on his first serve and saved all three break points he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Nava has won all four of his Challenger trophies on clay this year, a single-season record among the Americans. Earlier this season, he posted a 19-match winning streak on the surface, a streak that saw him win three titles (Asuncion, Concepcion and Sarasota) and finish second in Tallahassee.

Nava’s compatriot Tristan Boyer, defending champion in Montevideo, was also in action on Tuesday, but the 24-year-old was dismayed. Argentinian Alex Barrena got past Boyer 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-1.

Alvaro Guillen Meza of Ecuador shocked top seed Sebastian Baez 7-6(3), 6-4 to reach the second round. Former world number 17 Cristian Garin advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win against Andrea Collarini.
