Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has explained why he doesn’t believe Nate Diaz was ever that good at mixed martial arts.

When you talk about some of the most popular fighters in recent UFC history, especially over the course of the last decade, Nate Diaz has to be part of that conversation. He accomplished some great things during his time with the promotion, but his biggest moments came in his two-fight series with Conor McGregor, which really allowed him to reach a whole new level of superstardom.

Of course, Nate Diaz never quite managed to become world champion, but he did manage to challenge for the BMF title in the first-ever fight of its kind alongside Jorge Masvidal. Since leaving the UFC, Nate decided to test the waters in the boxing world, most notably with a losing effort against YouTuber Jake Paul.

In one recent podcast appearancethe aforementioned Ben Askren explained why he doesn’t really consider Nate Diaz a fighter.

Ben Askren questions Nate Diaz’s MMA legacy

“Nate Diaz, I don’t even think he’s that good, but he’s convinced people that he’s somehow good at fighting. He was average. His record is 21-13. That’s not that great. In the UFC he was 16-12. Please don’t post this video because Diaz’s army will attack me.”

Of course, Askren has done great things in mixed martial arts himself, but Diaz’s reputation goes far beyond what he could do in the cage. As we’ve already said, his rivalry with Conor McGregor has really helped take the sport to a whole new level, and who knows, the two foes could one day turn things around again – whether it’s in MMA or in the boxing ring.
