Pop culture culminates in martial arts as fighters discover characters that reflect their souls. Nabil Anane found his reflection in Monkey D. Luffy, the rubber-bodied pirate whose boundless ambition matches the young champion’s hunger for glory.

Anane defends his ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title against Jonathan Haggerty AN 173: Superbon vs. Noiri on Sunday, November 16 at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. The 21-year-old Algerian-Thai champion faces his toughest test against the former two-sport king in Japan, the birthplace of his anime hero.

Physical similarities between fighter and character go deeper than coincidence. Luffy stretches his rubber limbs impossibly far across the Grand Line, while Anane’s 6-foot frame creates similar problems for opponents. Both use height as a weapon that deflects expectations and breaks through defensive strategies.

Anane fully embraced the comparison at ONE 172 in March. He walked out in a flowing red kimono and straw hat that perfectly mirrored Luffy’s iconic Wano Country bow outfit. Japanese fans erupted as they recognized the tribute, which combined anime culture with martial arts.

The similarity extends beyond clothing choices. Anane has a scar under his eye that reflects Luffy’s signature facial marking. His tall, lean physique perfectly matches the animated pirate’s build. Even their battle philosophies are similar: both attack with reckless creativity while refusing to accept defeat.

Tokyo represents the perfect setting for another Luffy-inspired entrance. Eiichiro Oda created One Piece in Japan, which made Anane’s title defense in the manga’s homeland feel almost scripted. The young champion plans to honor that connection through his strike presentation.

“I have stitches under my eye here [similar to Luffy]. I’m tall and skinny, you know, and the character just suits me. And he’s entertaining. Everyone likes it, and everyone says it suits me, so well. So it’s one of my characters now,” he said.

“Yes, I think I’ll do that again. The Japanese people loved it. Well, I love Japan too. Not just the fighting culture, but also the people. Very nice, very polite, the streets are clean, the food is good. I love Japan.”

Nabil Anane aims for ties in multiple divisions

Luffy sails towards the legendary One Piece treasure that would crown him King of the Pirates. Nabil Anane is chasing his own legendary prize: five ONE World Championships across multiple weight classes and notable disciplines.

The quest began when Anane captured interim gold by knocking out Nico Carrillo at ONE 170. His stunning win over Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE 172 avenged an earlier loss while establishing him as one of the elite strikers. Those victories brought him to undisputed champion status, but his ambition extends far beyond one throne.

Team Mehdi Zatout provides the crew for Anane’s journey. His younger brother Yonis trains alongside him, creating a brotherhood similar to Luffy’s Straw Hat Pirates. Teammates like Abdulla Dayakaev and PTT Apichart Farm encourage him daily as they share the same quest for greatness.

Regian Eersel represents a future challenge that the young champion is excited about. The lightweight king’s combination of size, speed and technical brilliance presents problems that Anane admits he is not yet ready to solve. But a few years of growth can change that equation dramatically.

“Then I will find the five remaining pieces. Then I will be the king,” he said.

“One of my dreams is to be one of the best in every division I fight. If there are no more opponents at bantamweight, I’ll move up to featherweight, and I’ll do the best at featherweight as well. And when I clear all the featherweight, I’ll be the best at lightweight. That’s what I want to be. That’s my goal.”

“Well, he is very good and strong. It will be a great fight. It will not be easy for me. He is tall, has good hands, good knees and he is fast. I want to fight him in the future. Maybe in two or three years, three or four years, even five years.”
