I have a friend who is a Leeds fan.
I have known him through triathlon for over 30 years. He is a top guy, international triathlete and also international sailor.
Like I said, he’s also a Leeds fan, so not everything he touches turns to gold.
He has been all over the country watching them in the various competitions they attended.
Anyway, I thought I’d ask him a few questions before the match at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
This is what he had to say…
How long have you been supporting Leeds?
A bit of a newcomer… only in the last 56 years.
When was your first competition?
We lost against Wolves at Molineux in the early 70s!
What was your favorite match against us?
Probably the last game at Elland Road. I think we did well as a newly promoted team against an established Premier League side and Longstaff MOTM!
How do you think your season is going so far?
So far so good, with some recent points against top teams.
It seems your manager is playing a more defensive line-up and has achieved some hard-fought results. Is that a fair comment?
I think we have become sharper in midfield, which has helped the defense. We’re getting better at changing systems mid-match. We don’t have the Premier League quality of most clubs, so the team has to be greater than the sum of its parts – through discipline, dedication and hard work.
What is the usual formation outdoors?
Usually 5311, 532, 3511,352,4411 or 442… and they all change during the match!
Who is playing well for you this season?
Bijol has found his niche as a central defender. Ampadu leads by example and Aaronson never stops running. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (DCL) has intelligent class and is a leader.
Who plays poorly?
Largie Ramazani – on loan to Valencia – although a bit unfair as he is injured!
How’s Sean Longstaff doing?
Excellent, until he suffered a calf injury.
Who could win the game for you?
DCL
Who could lose you the game?
Luke Perry
Which player would you have from our team?
Anthony Gordon
Who do you think is our best player and worst player?
Nick Pope is the best.
I won’t say who I think is the worst, because they will probably play blind!
What do you think is the best way to play against Newcastle United?
Lots of effort, no time on the ball (especially in midfield), maximum concentration.
What do you think the score will be?
I’m counting on 1-1, although Willy Gnonto will score an injury time goal, only if the VAR rules it offside because he wasn’t wearing a red shirt!
Would you take a draw now?
Yes. We have set a target to average one point per game to stay top and an away point would be valuable.
If you had to put your house on the score, what would you say?
I would say: don’t tell the woman!
Where do you think Leeds will finish in the table this season?
16th
What does the future hold for Leeds if they survive?
WHEN Leeds stay, there will be some considered signings in line with PSR (as opposed to a certain team playing in blue) and a development of the stadium to increase capacity.
Leeds have produced some excellent players over the years. Will there be more to come?
Harry Gray from the Gray production line, as well as Sam Chambers.
