Plainville, MA – The $2.4 million Massachusetts Breeders Stakes returned to Plainridge Park Tuesday (Oct. 7) with seven running events featuring 3-year-old trotters and pacers. The undisputed star of the show was My Degenerate (Muscle Hill-Decadence), who set new stakes and track records and became the fastest three-year-old trotting gelding ever bred in the Bay State after going from gate to wire in the only $75,000 trotting division for stallions and geldings, stopping the clock in 1:53.1

My degenerate

Andy Miller sent My Degenerate to the front, setting fractions of :27.3, :57.1 and 1:24.3, with stablemate Te Quiero Lindy (Tyler Miller) following in step. As they made their way through turn three, My Degenerate began to pull away and when he did, Te Quiero tried to keep up with Lindy and made a break that took him out of contention. This left My Degenerate loose in the lead in the stretch, where he easily jogged to the line in 1:53.1.

The previous stakes and track record of 1:53.2 was set last week by My Degenerate’s stablemate Te Quiero Lindy, and the previous overall mass-bred speed mark of 1:54.2 for a three-year-old trotting gelding was set by Double Dealing in 2020.

The day started with two non-betting events. The first was a $45,000 division of pacing fillies that Beantown Deuce (Huntsville-Don’t Think Twice A) take off in a career achievement.

Beantown Deuce

Matt Kakaley took an early lead at the start, leading a single-file field through quarters of :27.4, :56.2 and 1:24.3. As she worked her way around the bend, Beantown Deuce began to break away from the field and as she reached the top of the stretch she rocketed home in :28.2 to win by seven lengths in a lifetime best, 1:53.

Beantown Deuce is owned by Michael Goldberg Racing, who also bred the filly in partnership with Andrew Harris Racing.

The second pre-card field was a group of trotting fillies worth $45,000, with Global Heritage (International Moni-Birthright) made a winning start from her first Massachusetts stakes of the year.

Global heritage

Global Heritage (Dexter Dunn) finished second to R Lady W (Matt Kakaley) in quarters of :27.1, :56.1 and 1:24.4 in a two-horse breakaway. At the start of the final turn, Dunn tipped Global Heritage and was followed heading to the wire by R Lady W, where she won by 1-¼ lengths in 1:53.1.

Global Heritage is owned and bred by Lindy Farms of Connecticut.

The regular card started with the $45,000 first division of stallion and gelding pacers and Jon I Love Dat (Down on the coast-Franney Love Dat) set a new record, matching his longevity and tying Apache Max (1994) as the fastest three-year-old pacing colt ever bred in Massachusetts.

Jon I Love That

Jon I Love Dat (Yannick Gingras) placed third behind Digging For Gold (Nick Graffam) in quarters of :26.2, :55.2 and 1:23.1. With the race in the turn, Gingras tipped Jon I Love Dat, came alongside Digging For Gold at the top of the stretch and then pulled away by 3-¾ lengths while Gingras was out cold, winning in 1:51.

The next event was the second $45,000 split of pacing mares with Wassail Blue Chip (Courtly choice-Baccara Hanover) won her second start in a row.

Wassail Blue Chip

Cindy’s Faith (Bruce Ranger) started at the point while Wassail Blue Chip (Yannick Gingras) was third as they headed to halftime in :55.2. As the fillies entered the backstretch, Gingras tipped off Wassail Blue Chip and crossed three-quarters into the lead. Treacherous Idol (Nick Graffam) made a mild bid as they rounded the far bend, but it had no effect on Wassail Blue Chip, who ran clear in 1:52.3 by 3.5 lengths to the wire.

Next came the second $45,000 split of trotting fillies, with Tactical Moni (Tactical landing-All Our Moni) made it two in a row in Massachusetts.

Tactical Moni

After an early four-horse sprint, Bridgeoverbroadway (Mitchell Cushing) took the early lead but soon surrendered it to Tactical Moni (Dexter Dunn) who pulled from third to take control. Tactical Moni opened up a big advantage on the backstretch, but Corner Store (Brett Beckwith) was on the move and was right on the back of Tactical Moni as they came out of the final turn. As they entered the stretch, Corner Store tipped to go, but Tactical Moni was already gone and trotted home at the top by 1-¾ lengths in 1:53.4.

TACTICAL MONI REPEAT

It was the fourth straight victory for Tactical Moni ($2.10), who is owned and bred by Moni Maker Stable and trained by Domenico Cecere.

The next race was the second split of pacing colts and geldings and RJs Red Devil (Huntsville-Ruthie J Killeen) ensured a daring backside brush delivered big wins at 11-1.

RJ’s Red Devil

Courageous Warrior (Matty Athearn) and Sweet Lucky Lou (Kevin Switzer Jr.) battled side by side through quarters of :27.3 and :55.2. As the race approached five-eighths, Matt Kakaley tipped RJ’s Red Devil from last place and blew past the entire field, opening a three-length lead at three-quarters. RJ’s Red Devil then rounded the turn and flew home under tippy-tap pushing to win by four lengths in 1:52.

RJS RED DEVIL REPEAT

RJs Red Devil ($24.00) is owned and bred by Fiddler’s Creek Stables and trained by Travis Alexander.

Drivers Dexter Dunn, Yannick Gingras and Matt Kakaley, together with trainer Domenico Cecere, all achieved two victories in the stakes action on Tuesday.
