Day 3 of the WTA 1000 Omnium Banque National Par Rogers in Montréal saw a crowd of seeds leave, but Coco Gauff conquered her 23 double errors to squeak past Danielle Collins, which was only 2 points away from winning in the decisive set, before the world No 2 rally on Tuesday evening.
It was a tough fight beyond. Making serving in court was the most difficult challenge. Maybe if I cut that in two, it could be a faster match for me. I thought I played well except that part of my game. Coco Gauff
Top Seed Gauff fought in the 3rd round by surviving Collins, her American countryman, 7-5 4-6 7-6 (2), after taking the last 6 points of the match to conquer her opener in her first hard Court Tune-up event prior to the US Open, which starts on 24 August.
The reigning French open champion, who also won the US Open 2023, went on to a 3rd round meeting with Veronika Kudermetova, after the Russian Serga Danilovic, 6-4 6-2, had eliminated.
“It was a frustrating match for me, just because I had the feeling that I was practicing well, and then I don’t think, I transferred it,” Gauff said. “But hopefully I got my bad match from the tournament out of the way, and I can come back stronger in the next round.”
The 21-year-old is looking for her 11th career-WTA title, but produced her 23 double errors against just 3 aces, one of which ended the game after 2 hours and 55 minutes.
“It was a tough battle there,” said Gauff. “Making serving in court was the most difficult challenge.
“Maybe, if I cut that in two, it could be a faster match for me. I thought I was playing well except that part of my game.”
Finding a rhythm on serve turned out to be a challenge for them both, and they each went 9 for 16 on their breaking point opportunities, while Collins himself was fitted in double.
The former finalist of Australian Open almost finished her 2nd victory over a World No 2 this season, after he had erased a break shortage in the decision maker twice, when Collins served 6-5 for the game, but she could not string the right series of points when losing the 2-Duce match.
“For me, to break her as often as me, there are some positive points to take from today,” Gauff added.
They exchanged breaks in the first 4 games, until Gauff held her serve and then broke again for a 4-2 lead before she held, but when he served for the set, the 21-year-old hit a Crosscourt Forehand wide to surrender the Break-Back.
Collins held 5-5, only for Gauff to hold before he breaks again to love, and to take the first set in 53 minutes on the 5th of her opponent’s double mistakes.
After trading 4 breaks in the first 6 games of the second, Collins 4-3 broke at Love and held twice to force a third set.
Collins served before the competition, first with 6-5, only for Gauff to break with a Backhand-Cross-Court winner to force a tiebreak in which she fell behind 1/2, but a mis-hit Lob winner landed and never dropped another point.
Collins hit a forehand-long and ran double errors and yielded a backhand to 5/2 before Gauff shot a service winner and ACE to end things.
This is the first tournament of Gauff since going 0-2 on grass that ended with an opening destruction in Wimbledon against Dayana Yastremska, and she will then be confronted with Veronika Kudermetova, that 29th seed Olga Danilovic of Serbia, 6-4 6-2.

The biggest shock of the day of the day saw the Japanese qualifying match Aoi Ito Stun Italian 7th Seed Jasmine Paolini, 2-6 7-5 7-6 (5), with her unorthodox repertoire that is different from that of another player on tour.
The 21-year-old Japanese defeated the American Katie Volynets in the 1st round before her first WTA 1000-level victory, then followed with her first above a top 10 opponent by collecting a set and breaking down to go after 2 hours and 27 minutes ahead.
The World No 110 has saved a match point in the 10th match of the second set, and survived the 6th ranked Paolini to book a 3rd round match against Spain’s 51st ranked Jessica Bouzas Maleiro, who defeated the American Ashlyn Kruiser, 6-4 6-4.
ITO reached the semi-final last October in Osaka in her WTA debut and claimed a title at 125 levels in Canberra in January, but until this week no competition had won at a tour level this year.
In an interview with Wtatennis.com at the end of 2024, ITO stated: “I don’t care if I play like everyone or not.”
Her web of Forehand -Plakjes, often casually swept with her feet planted on the floor, drill this out, as well as her unpredictable shot choice and shifts between deliberately slow stroke and injections of flat tempo.
For a one and a half half, ito seemed to be destined to leave her first game, but the crowd with intermittent flashes of Oddball Brilliance delighted.
However, Paolini was in sturdy control and set Smash with Panache after Smash, but with the finish line in sight began to crawl into the two-time big finalist match.
On 5-4 she went to Match Point, and during a fraction of a second both thought that the Italian had won a double mistakes thanks to thanks, but the call never came, and Ito responded quickly to return to the rally, so Paolini pushed her forehand wide.
For all ITOs nonchalant air and frequent attacks of laughter on the field, her third set performance came down to Real Grit, with 8 breaks of Serve in 12 regular competitions.
Ito led 3-1 and served for the game on 6-5, only for Paolini to storm back each time, and none of them could shake off the other person in the tiebreak.
On Matchpoint, ITO had a final flash of unexpected creativity in her sleeve-a Sabr who is reminiscent of Roger Federer, a daring attack on the network of the return and an outed volley.
Paolini, who had been so firm in dealing with the game style of Ito in the first set, will be her count of 67 casual mistakes, an undesirable record of the most dedicated in a tour level match so far.
Ito continues to meet the Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maleiro, who was a 6-4 6-4 winner on American 26th Seed, Ashlyn Krueger.
