Team India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj defeated South African all-rounder Marco Jansen with a stunning performance on Day 1 (Friday, November 14) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Siraj, who struggled with his line and lengths in the first session, took two wickets for the Men in Blue in the post-lunch session.
South African skipper Temba Bavuma opted to bat after winning the toss. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton added a 57-run stand for the first wicket inside the first 10 overs. India finally made the breakthrough in the 11th over when pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah produced an excellent performance to bowl Rickelton for 23 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah then removed Aiden Markram, who scored 31 runs off 48 balls. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took his first wicket of the match by dismissing Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma. By lunch the visitors found themselves in a difficult position at 105 due to the loss of 3 wickets.
India tightened their grip early in the second session. The home side reduced South Africa to 120 for 5 with Bumrah Tony trapping Zorzi lbw for 24 before Kuldeep Wiaan removed Mulder.
Mulder, who recently scored a triple century against Zimbabwe, has struggled in the recent Tests, recording his third consecutive low score since the Pakistan series. The visitors lost half their squad with just 120 runs on the board.
Watch: Mohammed Siraj Bamboozles Marco Jansen with peach
Mohammed Siraj produced a brilliant spell in the second session. In the 45th over of the Proteas’ first innings, the pacer took two wickets.
Mohammed Siraj first trapped wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne lbw for 16 with a delivery that seamed sharply back into the pads. The referee on the field gave it out and Verreynne opted for an assessment. Ball tracking showed that the device would have collided with the middle tree stump.
A few balls later, Mohammed Siraj bowled Marco Jansen for a duck. He delivered a ball that went through the gap between the bat and the pad and hit the stumps. The double attack swung the momentum firmly in India’s favor as South Africa struggled to rebuild.
Jansen had escaped just before his dismissal. The lower order batsman was left to defend, and the ball rolled past the post before he kicked it away.

South Africa lose eight wickets for 154 runs before tea
At the end of the second session on Day 1, South Africa stood at 154 for 8, with Tristan Stubbs at the crease. The reigning world Test champion last won a Test on Indian soil in 2010 and is coming off a 1-1 draw in Pakistan.
India, meanwhile, secured a 2-0 home sweep over the West Indies. Led by Shubman Gill, the hosts are favorites to extend their dominance over the Proteas. The Men in Blue recorded consecutive 3-0 wins over South Africa in 2015/16 and 2019/20.
South Africa A managed to surprise India A by chasing 417 in a recent warm-up match. The Proteas have not won a Test series in India since their historic victory in 1999/2000, a record that India will look to maintain in this two-match fixture.
