MLB News: How Many Teams Have Completed the Three-Peat?

After winning their second consecutive World Series championship in 2026, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on the cusp of MLB history.

In MLB history, only two franchises have completed a three-peat, and the Dodgers will look to join that exclusive club this coming season.

The New York Yankees have three-peated three times, and the Athletics have done so once.

Yankees 1936-1939

The Yankees were the first team to ever complete a three-peat in the MLB and even won a fourth straight title from 1936-39.

The teams from this era of Yankees baseball were loaded, with some of the most iconic names of the era such as Joe DiMiaggio and Lou Gehrig.

In the four series, the Yankees defeated the New York Giants in 1936 and 1937, the Chicago Cubs in 1938, and the Cincinnati Reds in 1939, with the latter two being World Series sweeps.

Yankees 1949-53

The Yankees also claimed the next three-parter, with this stretch spanning five seasons – one more than the previous period.

DiMaggio stuck around for the first three seasons of the Yankees’ next dominant period, donning the pinstripes with players like Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle during this time.

New York defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first of their five titles before defeating the Phillies in 1950 and the New York Giants in 1951. They also defeated the Dodgers in the final two seasons of their five-peat.

Athletics 1972-1974

The Athletics are the only non-Yankees team to complete a three-peat, doing so from 1972 to 1974.

Oakland dominated the 1970s, with a collection of legendary players in their ranks. Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter led the A’s star-studded roster, while other legends like Vida Blue, Sal Bando and Bert Campaneris rounded out the team.

During their three-peat, the A’s defeated the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets and the Dodgers.

Yankees 1998-2000

The most recent three-peat on the list also comes from New York, where the Yankees won all three World Series between 1998 and 2000.

The Yankees had a host of modern legends in the Bronx to create their dynasty, with Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Darryl Strawberry, Andy Petite and Mariano Rivera all donning the pinstripes during the run.

During their run, they defeated the San Diego Padres in their only World Series appearance to date, the Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets in 2000.
