Lightly raced mare on lease to build up broodmare value.
Barry Lockwood believes he and co-trainer Emma-Jane Vincent have the five-year-old mare Miss Personality in good shape for her first run at Ipswich on Wednesday.
Miss Personality, a daughter of Lonhro and a $400,000 purchase at the 2022 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, has made just six career starts and won three, including when she was last seen at Eagle Farm in July.
A few nagging issues have prevented Miss Personality from racing consistently, but Lockwood believes she is in the best condition he has ever seen and should acquit herself well in the Seven News Benchmark 70 over 800m.
“After that run at Eagle Farm she had a problem with her bum, we gave her a good spell and she came back fine, no more problems with her now,” said Lockwood.
“She’s got quite some skills, but it’s been a late start for her.
“I really think once she’s done a few runs in pre-season she’ll conquer at least six furlongs, that’ll be the plan for her.”
Although Miss Personality is still a long way from racing in the black type, Lockwood hopes she can run the numbers and add some value as a broodmare proposition, which could be as early as next season.
“I just rented her for next year,” Lockwood said.
“She has been sold to a number of people who will breed her next season and the idea is to try and build up a bit of form with her and then try her in some black type races if she can get in with her rating.”
“It’s very important and it will last us until winter, it gives us the opportunity.”
With that in mind, Lockwood believes Miss Personality, who is a $2.50 favorite for the second event in Ipswich on Wednesday, should be very difficult to beat with Tahlia Fenlon in the saddle.
“There’s no two ways about it, she did a really good test recently,” Lockwood said.
“I was going to try her again but the jump-outs got called off and I thought, ‘Oh well, there’s a half-mile race at Ipswich, she might as well go round and hopefully get paid for the trial.’
