Millie Turner, Manchester United’s experienced centre-back, has had a tough season.
She has spent most of the campaign injured, but she has fought her way back into the starting XI.
Hero
Turner was rewarded with her first start of the new year against London City Lionesses, and it proved an inspired choice.
Late in the second half she rose highest to powerfully head her side forward from Maya Le Tissier’s free-kick.
Return
After the match, Turner spoke about her match-winning performance at the official club website.
She said: “The last time I played this one I put my knee in, so yeah, coming back and getting the win today feels really special. My family is here and it’s my granddad’s birthday so it couldn’t have come at a better time!”
Asked to comment on her family celebrating in the stands, she said: “Yeah, honestly it’s just so special. Tooney (Ella Toone) came up to me after the game and said, ‘Mill, are you turning into me?’ So yes, I am buzzing.”
Turner was then asked about the character her team showed to come back from such an early deficit. She replied: “Yes, to be honest I didn’t think we deserved to be down by a goal. To come back like we always do, I thought it showed great team spirit. That’s what we’re all about.”
Turning point
She was then asked about a short team meeting that took place when Phallon Tullis-Joyce went down for treatment in the first half.
Jess Park scored a stunning equalizer just minutes later, but Turner suggested not much was really said to change the flow of the game.
I look ahead
United now welcome Atletico Madrid to the Progress with Unity Stadium on Thursday, with a 3-0 lead from the first leg.
She claimed: “Yes, a huge game. There are some huge games coming up. That’s why it’s important to have such good depth in the squad and that we can use everyone.”
