Mikel Arteta is forcing Arsenal to sign highly-rated Italian international striker Pio Esposito from Inter Milan La Gazzetta dello Sport.

After joining the academy in 2014, Esposito was long seen as a future star for the Nerazzurri, and a loan spell at Spezia Calcio in Serie B proved crucial in his development.

Remember new hair

His return from 17 league goals almost took Spezia back to the top last season, just two years after their relegation from Serie A.

That form earned him a place in Inter’s first team last summer, and the 6ft 1in centre-forward has continued his upward trajectory, scoring seven goals and six assists for his boyhood club during an impressive season.

On the international stage, his performances earned him a first call-up to Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy side last September, and he has since scored three goals in his five appearances for the Gli Azzurri.

According to La Gazzetta dello SportArsenal boss Mikel Arteta was ‘fascinated’ by Esposito’s displays in his side’s match against Inter in January where he caused problems, prompting the manager to bring in Gabriel Magalhaes to neutralize his threat.

In the aftermath of the match, the report adds that Arteta contacted the club’s sporting director Andrea Berta to discuss the five-time Italy international.

Arteta ‘fascinated’ by Esposito

After discussions with the Gunners manager, Berta contacted Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio to understand the cost and potential availability of the prolific forward in the summer, the report said.

However, Arsenal’s request was immediately rejected by the Serie A top sides, according to the Italian newspaper, and it remains to be seen whether the north Londoners will revive their interest in signing him when the summer transfer window opens.

Despite having three centre-forward options, Mikel Arteta appears keen to add more edge in the final third. Kai Havertz has struggled with recurring fitness issues over the past 18 months, while Gabriel Jesus faces an uncertain future at the Emirates, with Esposito now being eyed as a possible replacement.

Inter boss Cristian Chivu has described the 20-year-old as a centre-forward who can ‘do a little bit of everything’, and it is no surprise that Arteta discussed him as his qualities suit his system.

With a contract at San Siro running until 2030, Arsenal will have to submit a convincing offer well in excess of their £30 million. Transfer market appreciation for testing Inter’s resolve.
