Mikel Arteta has sworn that the work on the summer interrogation of Arsenal starts immediately after confirming the departure of four players from his team.

The Gunners ended their campaign with a 2-1 victory in Southampton who confirmed their position second in the Premier League for a third year in a row.

If Arsenal has to bridge the gap and eventually have to get over the line under Arteta, a considerable amount of work must be done in the summer window.

The Gunners let themselves be hopelessly short in the attack this period after the injuries sustained by Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Eventually they ended the season without no player registering double digits for goals for the first time in more than 100 years.

“I am very happy,” said Arteta after the deceased winner of Martin Odegaard. ‘You want to start your holiday in the coming days with a good feeling, with a good atmosphere, what smiley faces see there.

‘It was important to win it, it was also important to say goodbye to a few players who left our football club to thank you for their contribution.

“Some of them, like Kieran, have been on this trip for six years. Jorginho, we also try to hug him, Neto and Raheem.

‘So there are a few players where I had a duty to thank. I think we all have that and we wish them the best for the next season.

‘[Kieran] He said it yesterday, he said, “I’m going to score in my last game,” and he certainly did it. ‘

He added: ‘It’s time to think, time to reset and get our energy back.

‘It was a really demanding season, a season that has stretched us all. But I think the culture and mentality we have in the football club has sustained everything to perform with the resources we have at the highest level until the last day, and I think that is remarkable. ‘
